Opinion: How Top Tech Brands In Nigeria Are Wasting Resources On Celebrity Ambassadors

I was scrolling through my Facebook feed when I came along a post by Infinix Mobile. I felt very disappointed with the decision. I decided to go through the comments to see how other people felt about it.

I believe that the main pillar of any brand is the customers, without customers a brand is practically useless. Last year, Runtown was made the Infinix Ambassador. You and I know what happened after that – Did any of us buy any Infinix Phone because of Runtown. Definitely not.

The technology market has changed in a way that people actually want to know more about the devices and services – performance wise, features, pros, and cons from an honest point of view and majority of them get this information from blogs online. Does an artiste constantly update his followers on every single update on his social media accounts? I’m finding it extremely difficult to understand the connection with artistes and technology brands.

The annoying part of the whole thing is that most of the celebrities in question use an iPhone. Is Apple now a sub-brand of Infinix Mobility. Just to be rooster sure the definition of Ambassador hasn’t changed I googled it up again –

Brand ambassadors are simply people who represent and talk about your company in a positive way, preferably in front of lots of potential customers (i.e. their friends and family). A brand ambassador is someone who embodies the brand he or she is endorsing.

An ambassador represents and embodies the brand he is representing. An ambassador should be able to link between customers and the brand he’s representing. He should be to direct customers when called upon for enquiries. If I’m mistaken on how ambassadorship works please kindly correct me.

Why can’t Infinix use a customer or any techie who knows his/her onions well as an ambassador?

If you are going to make someone who doesn’t know the basic technical information of your product an ambassador why not channel the resources somewhere else rather than wasting money on iPhone worshipers all in the name of Ambassadors. Other Brands are not left out of this as well, our telecommunications companies aren’t doing the well at all.

Instead of channeling the resources to improving their network they are signing celebrity ambassadors up and down. One very slow network is guilty of this – Globacom. Slow with Pride. along with other service providers.

Call it ranting, shots fired or anything else you feel like but let’s call a spade a spade. Help customers and subscribers. Stop wasting money. Well, what do I know… I’m just a Tech Blogger with a keyboard.
