Public Holidays, Church Meetings and Threats to the Family.

On the 2nd of January 2012 in Nigeria, the President Goodluck-led administration increased the pump price of petrol by 116%(from N65 to N141). The NLC and TUC issued a joint press statement rejecting the increase and an immediate strike action was declared. Almost every worker in the nation stayed at home.

In the midst of all these, I read a comment online of a woman who was grateful for the industrial action. She was excited because she could not recall the last time she and her husband had been in the house together for 24 hours!

It now appears that the church is also perpetuating the unhealthy culture of having either the husband or the wife away from home especially on public holidays.

I mean there are also children who only have such holidays to get to see their parents who would have been out of the house before they wake up and back when they are already in bed.

There may be times when a public holiday may be the ideal time that the church’s workforce may have to meet, but the church leadership should ensure such meetings are short and to the point. This will ensure that those that are parents can go home early enough for some quality time together with their families.
