MTN South Africa drops free data for Twitter, increases WhatsApp bundles

MTN South Africa is ending its offer of zero-rated data for Twitter, saying it’s no longer feasible given the growing use of video on the messaging platform. The mobile operator also announced changes to its WhatsApp and Twitter bundles, with more data from October.

MTN started the ‘free Twitter’ as a 90-day promotion in May 2014 and has repeatedly extended the offer over the years, TechCentral reports. A spokeswoman said the offer had to end from 25 September due to the cost and demand it places on the network. Last month, the number of free Twitter users on MTN’s network soared to 13 million, using 1.9 petabytes of data.

At the same time, MTN announced changes to its WhatsApp and Twitter bundles, effective 1 October. The weekly WhatsApp bundle increases from 100MB for ZAR 5 to 250MB for ZAR 10. The daily offer increases from ZAR 1 to ZAR 2 and from 20MB to 50MB.

MTN’s Twitter bundles now come with 100 MB for ZAR 5, rather than 20 MB for ZAR 1, and the weekly rate will change from 100MB for ZAR 5 to 500MB for ZAR 20.
