Kano, Zamfara and Cross River residents paid highest transport fares in July – NBS

Residents of Kano, Zamfara and Cross River paid the highest intra-city bus journey fares in Nigeria in July, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said.

The bureau, in its transport fare watch report for July, said residents of Kano paid an average of N553.00; those in Zamfara paid N315.00 and those in the Cross River paid N310.00 in the month under review.

The report added that states with the lowest bus journey fare within city were Anambra (N137.50), Sokoto (N135.00) and Bauchi (N96.85).

Average fare paid by commuters for bus journey within the city increased by 7.06% month-on-month and by 15.13% year-on-year to N195.76 in July 2019 from N182.84 in June 2019.

The Transport fare watch report for July 2019 covers the following categories namely bus journey within the city per drop constant route; bus journey intercity, state route, a charge per person; airfare charge for specified routes single journey; journey by motorcycle (Okada) per drop; and waterway passenger transport. 

According to the report, the average fare paid by commuters for bus journey intercity increased by 0.76% month-on-month and decreased by -6.60% year-on-year to N1,619.05  in July 2019 from  N1,606.92 in June 2019. States with highest bus journey fare intercity were Abuja FCT (N4,150.00), Adamawa (N2,550.00) and Borno (N2,480.00) while States with lowest bus journey fare within city were Bayelsa (N997.00), Bauchi (N985.10) and Enugu (N955.00).

Also, the average fare paid by air passengers for specified routes single journey increased by 0.32% month-on-month and by decreased by -4.54% year-on-year to N30,562.97 in July 2019 from N30,464.86 in June 2019.  States with highest air fare were Jigawa (N35,300.00), Kwara (N35,150.00) and Rivers (N35,100.00) while States with the lowest airfare were Sokoto (N25,200.00), Oyo (N25,000.00), and Katsina (N24,450.00).

The report noted that the average fare paid by commuters for journey by motorcycle per drop increased by 1.38% month-on-month and 10.42% year-on-year to N118.62.00 in July 2019 from N117.00 in June 2019. States with highest journey fare by motorcycle per drop were Rivers (N197.00), Ondo (N190.00) and Ebonyi (N185.00) while states with lowest journey fare by motorcycle per drop were Jigawa (N60.00), Katsina (N60.00) and Adamawa (N55.00).

“Average fare paid by passengers for water way passenger transport increased by 9.05% month-on-month and decreased by -3.24% year-on-year to N550.89 in July 2019 from N505.18 in June 2019. States with the highest fare by waterway passenger transport were Bayelsa (N1,800.00), Delta (N1,790.00) and Rivers (N960.00) while states with the lowest fare by waterway passenger transport were Niger (N190.00), Gombe (N180.00) and Borno (N130.00).”
