The average price of major food items in Nigeria, like yam, rice and tomatoes, reduced in July, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said.

The NBS said this in its “Selected Food Price Watch (July 2019)’’ report released on its website.

It said the average price of 1 dozen of Agric eggs medium size decreased year-on-year by -0.73% and month-on-month by -5.45% to N468.31 in July 2019 from N495.32 in June 2019 while the average price of piece of Agric eggs medium size (price of one) decreased year-on-year by -6.88% and month-on-month by -2.35% to N38.38 in July 2019 from N39.31 in June 2019.

Also, the average price of 1kg of tomato decreased year-on-year by -39.47% and month-on-month by -9.96% to N203.55 in July 2019 from N226.07 in June 2019.

The bureau also said the average price of 1kg of rice (imported high quality sold loose) decreased year-on-year by -3.96% and increased month-on-month by 0.93% to N356.10 in July 2019 from N352.83 in June 2019.

Rice is considered a staple food for most households in Nigeria. Although its importation has been banned, imported rice, mostly through porous land borders, is still common across Nigeria.

Similarly, the average price of 1kg of yam tuber decreased year-on-year by -39.16% and month-on-month by -6.21% to N170.85 in July 2019 from N182.15 in June 2019.

The NBS said in arriving at the report, fieldwork was done by over 700 NBS staff in all states of the federation supported by supervisors, who were monitored by internal and external observers.

It said the prices were collected across all the 774 local governments across all states and the FCT from over 10,000 respondents and locations and reflect actual prices households state they actually bought those items.

“The average of all these prices is then reported for each state and the average for the country is the average for the state.

“NBS audit team subsequently conducts randomly selected verification of prices recorded,” it added.
