In an important announcement made on Thursday, 3rd of October, 2019, the world’s most international premium beer; Heineken joins the 2019 Lagos Open as official sponsors. The news is huge in the Tennis world, as Heineken is set to deliver another brilliant sporting experience with the Lagos Open happening this October.

Heineken, which is known for more than its perfect tasting beer, wants to use this sponsorship to continue to drive distinctiveness by giving its consumers unique and unconventional brand experiences.

This year’s competition holds from October 7 to October 20, 2019, at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, Lagos.

For over 17 years, the International Tennis Federation- accredited tournament had been played under the name, Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis, and for the second time this year, will bear a name similar to that of other major tennis competitions such as the US Open. Already, over 240 players from about 57 countries have registered to participate in the tournament.

Given Heineken’s pedigree at hosting sporting events, a lot of fans have shared their excitement and hopes of a brilliant tournament. “When Heineken sponsors, big things happen” a Nigerian player who has been training for the games said. “With such a big sponsorship, many of the players will get more exposure, because the games will be shown all over, and that is a good thing for us, and the country.”

Emmanuel Oriahki, Marketing Director, Nigerian Breweries Plc. says “everyone knows that Heineken has a commitment to sharing the passion of sports, and this move is no different from that goal. The brand has sponsored tennis competitions in many other parts of the world, and  is now set to bring some of that spark and magic to Nigeria, where we know the people love sports a lot.”

Heineken has on its sports sponsorship portfolio events such as the UEFA Champions League, the US Open, even the ATP Auckland Open, which is popularly called – the Heineken Open.

Last year’s Lagos Open games were won by India’s Pranjala Yadlapalli in the Women’s Singles Category and Britain’s Jack Draper in the Men’s Category. For this year, highly rated players like Japan’s Shuichi Sekiguchi, Nigeria’s Joseph Ubon, Tunisia’s Skander Mansouri and French player Tom Jomby will be competing for the grand prize in the Men’s Singles event. While the likes of 2014 singles runner-up, Sarah Adegoke and Blessing Samuel from Nigeria, will compete with returning faces such as Valeriya Strakhova from Ukraine, and America’s Alexandra Riley in the Women’s Singles event.
