One of Africa’s biggest financial institutions, UBA has approved the appointment of Abiola Bawuah as the Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa. Abiola Bawuah’s appointment which was announced by the board of directors, joined the Group Board as an Executive Director, overseeing operations across the continent, outside Nigeria.
UBA, which also operates in 19 other African countries and France, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates is also experiencing changes in leadership in other roles Chris Ofikulu becomes the Regional CEO, of UBA West Africa, Uzoechna Molokwu as the Deputy Managing Director of UBA Ghana and Ayokunle Olajubu as Managing Director/CEO UBA Liberia although subject to approval as well as others.
Abiola Bawuah was formerly the Regional CEO, of West Africa where she supervised the operations in Benin, Burkina Faso Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Senegal, and Sierra Leone.
Group Board Chairman Mr. Tony Elumelu spoke about the new CEO, Mrs. Abiola Bawuah describing her immense contribution to the growth of UBA Africa for close to a decade.
He said “She brings a wealth of experience in commercial banking and stakeholder engagement. It also gives me great pleasure that with her appointment, the UBA Group Board has now become a majority female board,”
As for the other role mentioned above, Chris Ofikulu who is now the Regional CEO, of UBA West Africa, has been with UBA for over two decades with experience in corporate, commercial, and retail banking.
Uzoechina Molokwu, who is now being announced as Deputy Managing Director of UBA Ghana, although subject to local regulatory approvals, was the Executive Director, Business Development, at UBA in Cote d’Ivoire, with over 23 years of banking experience.
Ayokunle Olajubu, was also announced as the Managing Director/CEO of UBA Liberia, also subject to approvals, will be driving compliances across African subsidiaries, and has 30 years of banking experience in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Cote d’Ivoire and in Gambia.
Also, Theresa Henshaw, was made CEO of UBA UK, subject to approvals as well, was formerly DMD, Business Development, UBA America and had joined as ED, Business Development at UBA UK. Usman Isiaka, formerly CEO, of UBA Sierra Leone is now Deputy CEO of UBA America.
While, High Chief Samuel Oni, an independent non-executive Director left the Board due to the expiration of his tenure. Chief Samuel Oni joined the UBA Group in January 2015 and served for eight years.
Mr. Elumelu expressed his appreciation to the High Chief for his commitment, leadership, and extensive contributions and wished him the best in his future endeavors.
