Digital Switch Over: NBC told to bar foreign pay TVs

A group, the Concerned Digital Switch Over  Stakeholders, has called on the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to stop foreign pay-TV operators from broadcast signal distribution in Nigeria.

The group’s spokesman, Chief Abel Danladi, who spoke with Daily Trust in Abuja yesterday, said allowing the foreign TVs to distribute broadcast signals would further delay the final Digital Switch Over (DSO) date and erode whatever gains already made by the NBC and the Nigerian companies on the switchover process.

He said, the “major gain of the DSO that will end foreign domination of broadcast signal distribution in Nigeria is facing stiff opposition from the foreign multinationals bent on retaining their controlling position in the pay TV segment.’’

According to him, the Federal Government’s White Paper on Transition from Analogue to Digital Terrestrial Broadcasting in Nigeria issued in 2012 says no foreign pay TV should distribute signals once the DSO begins.
