Do you have a Jay Dee? No! I don’t mean a Jay Zee.

In pronunciation, we call it a J.D /Jay Dee/ and phonetically /Jei di:/. It’s called a Job Description. A Job description is a formal account of an employee’s responsibilities at the workplace.

It is a broad yet specific and written statement of a job role. It consists of the duties, scope, responsibilities, who the Job title reports to and direct reports as well.

So, when you are hired on a job always ask for the job description during induction. This will give you a broad view of what your role needs to do in the organization, who you will be working with, who you will be reporting to.

Job descriptions should not only be orally communicated, but it should also be documented, written. So, just because you have been told what your job description is, is not enough, ask for a document.

The Job description needs to be written as a document for your action and guidance for the duration of your work on that role.

While Job descriptions can be modified to suit departmental or organizational objectives, this will need to be done usually by your line head alongside HR and communicated to you. For the benefits of entrepreneurs, also don’t employ and induct an employee orally alone.

Kindly make it written, even if the employee is a blue collar, use pictures to communicate what the Job description entails. So that the employee can revisit from time to time even in your absence.

So I ask again, Do you have a J.D?
