HR Gets International Dimension As SON Launches 4 New Standards

Human resources management (HRM) in Nigeria has taken a new dimension as four new international standards adopted for national use were launched to improve organisational performance in the country.
The 4  Nigeria Industrial Standards were unveiled at the International Conference Centre, Abuja as part of the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) recently.
The Standards are;
  • NIS ISO 30400:2016- Human Resource Management –Vocabulary,
  • NIS ISO 30405:2016 – Human Resource Management- Guidelines on Recruitment,
  • NIS ISO 30408:2016 – Human Resource Management – Guidelines on Human Governance,
  • NIS ISO 30409:2016 – Human Resource Management- Guidelines on Workforce Planning.
Addressing the conference, Director General, Standards Organisation of Nigeria, Osita Aboloma Esq. stated that the adoption of the international HR standards was occasioned by the need for uniformity in practice, reduction of inefficiencies and risks, promotion of greater effectiveness of HR management practices as well as compliance with relevant HR laws in Nigeria.
Represented by Barr. Richard Agu, a Director, the SON Chief Executive enthused that Nigeria’s active participation in the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee (TC) 260 through the Nigerian National Mirror Committee on Human Resources Management cleared the path for the adoption of the launched Standards.
Aboloma acknowledged the partnership of experts from CIPM, ITF, FIRS,UNILAG, NECA, Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM), Nigeria Breweries, Nigerdock, Chevron, UBA, ASCON, UACN, NLNG, UACN and Office of the Head of Service of the Federation amongst others for  sacrificing their time and finances in the elaboration of the International Standards and the adoption for national use.
He offered a 30% discount on the sale of the Standards to HR Practitioners at the conference and urged all present to obtain them for application, to improve the quality of Human Resources Management in both the public and private sectors in Nigeria.
Introducing the 4 new standards to participants at the Conference, CIPM Director of Standards,  Dr. Charles Ugwu expressed pride at the valuable contributions of Nigerian experts during the development of the international standards by ISO which ensured that our local perspective formed part of the consideration in the final approved documents.
Also speaking on the new standards, Mr Dele Aloko of SHRM, sought the greater participation of more HR Practitioners in the activities of the National Mirror Committee to further enhance the quality of Nigeria’s contributions to international standards development and the domestication for use in the country.
Barr. Richard Agu made a public presentation of the HRM Vocabulary; President of CIPM, Udom Inoyo presented the HRM Guidelines on Recruitment; Wale Adediran, CIPM Vice President unveiled the Guidelines on Human Governance, while the Guidelines on Workforce Planning was upheld by CIPM Immediate Past President, Tony Arabome.
