Nigeria ranks 114 in global Internet speed ranking

Of the six African countries listed on the report, Nigeria came in fourth below Kenya, which has the fastest internet speed on the continent.

Akamai, a content delivery and cloud services company based in the US, has released its State of the Internet report for the first quarter of 2017 and it shows how backwards Nigeria is on almost every metric measured.

In terms of average internet connection speed, the report shows that Nigeria ranks 114 out of the 147 countries ranked globally with an average speed of 3.9 Megabytes per second (Mbps).

Of the six African countries listed on the report, Nigeria came in fourth below Kenya, which has the fastest internet speed on the continent; followed by South Africa and Morocco.

Egypt, which had the slowest average internet connection speed in Africa, and Namibia are the only countries below Nigeria, according to the Akamai report.

As for Quarter-on-Quarter change, Nigeria had a 6.7% drop, though it showed a 16% increase from the same period in 2016, while continental leader Kenya experienced a 19% drop in average internet connection speed compared to the last quarter of 2016 and a 67% increase from the same period last year.

All of that aside, Nigeria is still one of the most expensive countries in terms of data prices and the infrastructure deficit (coupled with the recession and economic turmoil) all make for a crappy consumer internet rating.

Obviously, the Kenyans are doing something right and perhaps Nigeria can learn from them. What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
