Solar-Powered Tricycles To Be Introduced Before The End Of This Year – FG

Nigerian roads are soon to be graced by solar-powered tricycles – popularly called Keke, this announcement was made by the Federal Government on Thursday, the effort is geared towards a gradual phase out of the  petrol engines in use at the moment in Nigeria

It was confirmed that the expo in Uyo – Akwa Ibom, which will hold later this year is where the new tricycles would be launched..

This move is part of government’s move towards a green society as stated by the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, he said;  ‘the federal government is working assiduously on introducing the solar-powered tricycles, which are clean and non-polluting with zero emissions.’

 Mrs Anthonia Ekpa, the Chairman, Committee on Short Code Social Media App, who represented the minster stated this during a visit made by her committee to the road transport unions in Abuja. The union includes the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW); Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN); Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) and Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN).
These tricycles which are capable of carrying up to 4 passengers ferry hundreds of thousands of passengers in towns and cities across the country, mostly across short distances has lower maintenance cost, however, the key challenge will be the cost of purchasing this technology-empowered tricycles which will put Nigeria’s abundant sun to good use.
