Transport fares rise, as Petrol, Diesel, Kerosene, Cooking Gas prices drop in July

Despite the decline in the prices of Petrol, Diesel, Kerosene and Cooking Gas in July, the average transport fare paid by passengers increased in the same month.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in its latest report said that the average price for the refilling of a 5kg cylinder for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) decreased by -1.20% month-on-month and -9.69% year-on-year to N2,010.45 in July 2018 from N2,034.93 in June 2018. Also, the average price paid by consumers for premium motor spirit (petrol) decreased by -0.09 year-on-year and -0.9% month-on-month to N146.80 in July 2018 from N148.10 in June 2018. For Kerosene, the average price per litre paid by consumers for National Household Kerosene decreased by -1.00% month-on-month and -1.29% year-on-year to N276.87 in July 2018 from N279.67 in June 2018.

According to the NBS report on transport fare watch for July 2018 showed that Average fare paid by commuters for bus journey within the city increased by 0.82% month-on-month and 30.36% year-on-year to N170.03 in July 2018 from N168.90 in June 2018.

States with highest bus journey fare within the city were Abuja FCT (N335.00), Cross River (N285.00) and Abia (N240.00) while States with lowest bus journey fare within the city were Rivers (N110.00), Anambra (N92.00) and Bauchi (N90.00).

NBS also stated that average fare paid by commuters for bus journey intercity increased by 0.30% month-on-month and 14.81% year-on-year to N1,733.33 in July 2018 from  N1,729.01 in June 2018. States with highest bus journey fare intercity were Abuja FCT (N4,200.00), Adamawa (N3,200.00) and Borno (N2,700.00) while States with lowest bus journey fare within city were Anambra(N1,150.00), Enugu (N1,090.00) and Bauchi (N1,060.00).

Notably, average fare paid by air passengers for specified routes single journey increased by 0.59% month-on-month and 0.54% year-on-year to N32,016.22 in July 2018 fromN31,828.38 in June 2018.

States with the highest airfare were Lagos (N41,500.00), Edo (N39,900.00) and Abuja FCT (N39,500.00) while States with the lowest airfare were Nassarawa (N27,500.00), Osun (N24,950.00), and Katsina (N24,500.00).

Further analysis showed that the average fare paid by commuters for the journey by motorcycle per drop increased by 0.92% month-on-month and 4.69% year-on-year to N107.43  in July 2018 from N106.06 in June 2018. States with highest journey fare by motorcycle per drop were Imo (N200.00), Ondo(N180.00) and Enugu (N170.00) while states with lowest journey fare by motorcycle per drop were Jigawa (N60.00) Katsina (N60.00) and Niger (N60.00).

However, NBS stated that the average fare paid by passengers for waterway passenger transport decreased by -1.27% month-on-month and -5.00% year-on-year to N569.32 in July 2018 from N574.30 in June 2018.  States with the highest fare by waterway passenger transport were Bayelsa (N2,000.00), Rivers (N2,000.00) and Delta (N1,545.00) while states with the lowest fare by waterway passenger transport were Oyo (N240.00), Gombe (N180.00) and Abuja FCT (N150.00).
