Patricia Obo-Nai’s rise from a network planning engineer to chief executive of Telecel Ghana has drawn attention to a career built over nearly two decades inside the telecommunications industry.
Obo-Nai became CEO of Vodafone Ghana, now Telecel Ghana, in April 2019, becoming the first Ghanaian woman to lead the telecommunications company.
Her appointment followed years of progressively senior technical and management responsibilities. She joined Millicom Ghana, operator of the Tigo network, in 2000 as a Network Planning Engineer before becoming Chief Technology Officer in December 2006.
She was the first woman to occupy the CTO position at the company and, at the time, the first woman to hold such a role in Ghana, Brandspur Brand News reports.
Obo-Nai moved to Vodafone Ghana in January 2011, taking up the position of Chief Technology Officer. Her professional development was complemented by formal training in both engineering and management.
She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and an Executive MBA in Project Management from the University of Ghana.
One of the defining assignments of her tenure as CEO came in 2023, when she led the transition of Vodafone Ghana to Telecel Ghana.
The exercise involved regulatory approvals, contract renegotiations, customer communications and a complete operational rebrand. The network remained operational throughout the transition.
Obo-Nai continues to lead Telecel Ghana, with the company pursuing an artificial intelligence focused strategy under her direction. The approach includes the use of AI in network performance, fraud detection and customer service.
Her career has attracted praise from professionals who view her progression as an example of leadership developed through direct experience of a company’s technical and operational workings.
The journey from network planning to technology leadership and eventually the chief executive office has also placed her experience at the centre of discussions about the value of technical expertise in senior corporate leadership.
Obo-Nai’s career spans more than two decades across engineering, technology, telecommunications operations and executive management, culminating in her leadership of a national telecoms operator.
