Are you the right fit for your role?

The Right Fit and the wrong fit at the workplace.

I hired help over a month ago. She made me understand more than ever the meaning of having the right fit for a role at the workplace. Khadijat (not her real name), adds value to her work. The picks up socks from shoes without you telling her after she does the dishes, she picks up any plates that go into the sink afterwards without grumbling. you don’t have to keep complaining to her about a task because she executes the tasks, well over and beyond.

Khadijat is the only Help that I have had who is never tired of doing her job. On the contrary,

I get tired of giving her work to do.

It is obvious that she loves her work and has a sole objective to make our house better than she met it.

The same applies to the workplace.

The right fit…

Is interested in learning the ropes and becoming better on the role while adding value to the work.

Loves what he or she does at the workplace, and is not forced to execute tasks at the workplace

The wrong fit…

Don’t get me wrong, as a Nigerian that I am, I have had to do jobs that I would naturally not turn to. But I prepared well for the interviews, did my research, said the right words and got the job.

Firstly, because I needed a job, and more importantly, Money! Oh Yes! I needed the money.

The job was stressful for me, but I kept on adding effort.

Motion and progress are however two different things.

The pressure hits you like a brick on the face. That kind of pressure you feel when you are studying Chemical engineering in school, yet you are busy broadcasting the news on the Channels television of your mind every time the Lecturer lectures Technical Drawing 206 in class.

You have an admission letter for chemical engineering yet have a Heart letter for Mass Communication.

This is not to say that there is no skill or knowledge to be acquired when an employee is a wrong fit for the role though. Lack of fulfilment and demotivation are often the bane of this experience.

Does anyone have a story or two to share on their wrong fit experience?

How do you handle it when you are a wrong fit for the role? Do you even know what being a wrong fit is or it’s all about the money baby?!

Let’s discuss this, please drop your comments below…
