The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the Ebonyi State Government have resolved to enhance their collaboration in the area of standardisation in order to promote business development in the State.
This resolution was made during a meeting of the SON Enugu State Office with the Ebonyi State Commissioner for the newly created Ministry of Business Development, Dr Stephen Odo in Abakaliki recently.
The SON Coordinator, Enugu/Ebonyi States, Mr Qazeem Yahya appealed to the Ebonyi State Government for support in bringing the benefits of standardisation closer to the people of the State through the provision of accommodation for a SON State Office.
According to him, manufacturers in Ebonyi State and especially the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) require technical support and guidance from SON to eliminate losses, meet standards requirements in their production, deliver quality goods to the people and optimize returns on investment.
Mr Yahya disclosed that manufacturing activities in Ebonyi State were being overseen from the SON Office in Enugu, thus limiting the positive impact of the organisation’s technical support to the people in view of the distance and logistic requirements.
Responding, Dr Stephen Odo acknowledged the need for SON’s permanent presence in Ebonyi State stressing that the newly established Ministry of Business Development is charged with the responsibility of improving and easing trade in the state.
He requested a reminder on SON’s earlier request to the State Government concerning accommodation for a State office and promised to facilitate a courtesy visit of the SON Chief Executive to the Ebonyi State Governor on the matter.
The Commissioner disclosed that a monthly MSME Stakeholders Forum has been put in place by his Ministry and requested SON to nominate a representative to serve on the organising committee.
Dr Odo also invited SON to the periodic MSME training workshop as an avenue for regular interaction with stakeholders in the State, while hoping for a continual productive collaboration with the State Government.
