MoneyGram has acknowledged that during a breach in September, hackers gained access to and stole transactions and personal data belonging to its clients. The company’s website and application services were unavailable for a week as a result of the breach, which happened between September 20 and 22, 2024.
September 27, 2024, was the date of discovery of the breach. Customers’ names, phone numbers, email addresses, dates of birth, and, in certain situations, Social Security numbers and official identification documents are among the stolen data.
Furthermore, bank account numbers, MoneyGram Plus Rewards numbers, and postal addresses were all hacked. Dates and quantities associated with the transactions were also impacted. MoneyGram is still in the early phases of its inquiry, despite serving over 50 million individuals annually and operating in over 200 countries.
The precise number of impacted clients has not been published, but the company is striving to identify them all, BrandSpur business and economy news reports.
Sydney Schoolfield, a MoneyGram spokesman, declined to offer any additional information outside of the business’s formal statement.
MoneyGram responded to the breach by taking action to control and resolve the problem, which included temporarily disrupting certain processes. With the assistance of outside cybersecurity specialists, they have started an investigation and are working with law police.
As mandated by law, MoneyGram has previously notified U.K. data protection officials, mentioning the breach’s potential global ramifications. The impacted consumers have been encouraged by the organisation to keep an eye out for instances of fraud and identity theft by checking their credit reports and account statements. The business is still looking into the specifics of the incident, but it hasn’t disclosed how the breach happened yet.
