Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) feed on TikTok has been made available to all users in the US, UK, and Ireland, irrespective of their age grade.
The STEM feed, which was first made available to TikTok users under the age of 18, is now accessible by default to users in these locations of all ages. The objective is to increase the platform’s accessibility of educational content so that users can investigate subjects related to STEM.
The platform highlights that although the feed is now enabled by default, users may still choose to turn it off under the “content preferences” section of the app’s settings. This expansion comes after lawmakers and advocacy organizations expressed concern about TikTok’s influence on youth. The platform has emphasized its emphasis on educational content through the STEM feed after the app was accused of using addictive design elements that keep users interested for extended periods.
Shou Chew, the CEO of TikTok, stated in previous congressional testimony in the US available to BrandSpur digital news platform, that the STEM stream is a component of the company’s endeavors to offer customers value, particularly in educational settings.
The purpose of the piece was to refute the claim that the platform was detrimental to the mental health of young people. With this most recent development, TikTok appears to be transforming itself from a purely entertaining app to one that promotes education and exploration.
According to the firm, the number of STEM-related videos on the platform has increased by 18% since the feed’s original launch, and it has received over 200 million views.
To further expand its reach, TikTok also intends to add local language support for this function in the future.
