More than a year after launching advertisements in areas like the U.S., the UK, Germany, and Canada, Amazon will begin showing advertisements for films and television series on Prime Video in India on June 17.

Amazon announced the deployment of “limited advertisements” on Prime Video content streaming in an email sent to Indian Prime subscribers on Tuesday. Without providing any details, Amazon first declared in October that it would begin serving Prime Video advertisements in India at some point this year.

According to an Amazon spokesperson, the company is also launching an ad-free Prime Video add-on that Prime users can purchase on top of their current subscription for an introductory price of 699 Indian rupees (about $8) per year or 129 Indian rupees (about $1.52) per month. However, the representative withheld further information.

Continuing, in the United States, Amazon introduced a $3 monthly add-on last year to provide Prime Video subscribers with an ad-free experience. According to reports available to BrandSpur digital news platform, the internet giant was able to secure over $1.8 billion in ad spending commitments for its video streaming service thanks to that decision.

This week, the company announced that over 130 million Americans are now watching Prime Video with advertisements, up from 115 million the previous year.

Similar to Amazon, Netflix and Disney+, also offer ad-supported plans in the U.S. and other markets. In addition to Prime Video, Amazon offers MX Player in India, which includes advertisements to help the company generate additional advertising revenue. The service, which Amazon acquired from Times Internet last year, offers a subscription to limit the ads users see. Amazon Prime in India starts at 299 Indian rupees (roughly $3.50) per month and goes up to 1,499 Indian rupees (roughly $17.57).
