Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO) has reinforced its commitment to sports development in Nigeria and across Africa following the conclusion of the 2026 NPA Lagos International Polo Tournament, where Lagos STL emerged victorious in the prestigious Majekodunmi Cup.
The tournament, held at the historic Lagos Polo Club from January 27 to February 15, attracted elite local and international teams, dignitaries, corporate leaders, and thousands of spectators, highlighting the event as one of Africa’s premier polo showcases. Lagos STL secured a 10–7 win over Shoreline/A1 in a closely contested final, with a dramatic late goal deciding the championship. The victory capped a dominant run for STL, who also captured the Independence Cup, Dapo Ojora Cup, Owen Cup, and the Argentine Ambassador’s Cup, completing a clean sweep.
Brandspur Brand News Desk reports that GTCO, as the headline sponsor, continues to leverage the tournament to promote sporting excellence, cultural heritage, and international engagement. GTCO Group CEO, Segun Agbaje, highlighted the broader societal impact of sport, stating, “This tournament celebrates teamwork, discipline, fair play, and excellence. Beyond the field, it showcases Nigeria and Africa to a global audience, reinforcing the continent’s position on the world stage.”
Lagos STL captain, Yasin Amusan, named Most Valuable Player of the final, credited the team’s preparation, resilience, and fan support for their success. While Shoreline/A1 finished runners-up in the Majekodunmi and Independence Cups, they won the Oba of Lagos Cup earlier in the tournament. Other notable outcomes included Lagos Art Hotel claiming the Chapel Hill Denham Open Cup and Kano Golden Alchemy taking the Sani Dangote Memorial Cup.
Founded in 1904, the Lagos Polo Club remains one of Africa’s most historic sporting institutions. GTCO’s ongoing sponsorship underscores its strategy to support platforms that foster community pride, excellence, and global visibility for Nigerian sport.
