Global retail giant Walmart is set to open its third physical store in South Africa on Saturday, 28 February 2026, as it accelerates its push to establish a stronger nationwide presence.
The new outlet will be located at East Point Shopping Centre in Boksburg, within the Ekurhuleni metropolitan area. The store will operate from 8am to 8pm on weekdays and Saturdays, and from 9am to 5pm on Sundays and public holidays, offering shoppers extended access to Walmart’s retail experience.
The Boksburg launch follows earlier store openings at Clearwater Mall and Fourways Mall, both of which recorded strong customer traffic and positive feedback, particularly around pricing and product availability. Walmart says consumer response to its everyday low-price strategy has reinforced confidence in its South African rollout.
Brandspur Brand News understands that the Boksburg outlet forms part of a broader plan to introduce 21 additional Walmart-branded stores across Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape. Several of the new locations will replace existing Game stores operated by Massmart, Walmart’s majority-owned subsidiary.
Retail executive Hector Msane, who brings more than two decades of industry experience, will oversee the new store and lead the official opening ceremony. The outlet occupies Shop L17 at the corner of Rietfontein and North Rand Road in Jansen Park.
Massmart has confirmed that some Game outlets may be phased out in the coming months as part of the transition to the Walmart format, a move aimed at consolidating operations and strengthening brand visibility nationwide.
According to Massmart’s Vice President of Format Acceleration, André Steyn, independent basket price comparisons conducted after earlier store launches show Walmart consistently undercutting competitors on everyday essentials such as bread, milk, eggs, rice, sunflower oil, and sugar.
Consumer data from existing stores also highlights strong demand for fresh food items and selected imported brands, prompting Walmart to expand its range of household appliances, including refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, and water dispensers.
Customers in and around Boksburg will also have access to Walmart’s Africa-focused mobile app, which now supports a 60-minute express delivery service within an eight-kilometre radius of the store, extending previous coverage limits.
The new outlet is expected to create around 80 direct jobs and will stock products sourced from local manufacturers, including cleaning supplies produced by Ekurhuleni-based Ultra Chem.
In line with its community engagement efforts, Walmart plans to donate more than 1.5 tonnes of non-perishable food to FoodForward SA, supporting vulnerable households in the region.
Headquartered in the United States, Walmart says its South African strategy combines competitive pricing, local sourcing, and digital convenience as it intensifies competition in the country’s retail sector.
