The Federal Government has approved Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, 2026, as official public holidays to commemorate the Eid-el-Fitr festival, marking the conclusion of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who conveyed the decision on behalf of the Federal Government, extending congratulations to Muslim faithful for successfully completing the fasting period.
Brandspur Politics reports that the Minister encouraged adherents of Islam to uphold the core values demonstrated during Ramadan, including compassion, generosity, peace, tolerance and sacrifice, urging that these principles should continue to guide daily interactions beyond the festive season.
He also called on Nigerians across religious and ethnic lines to use the period as an opportunity to pray for national unity, stability and sustained development, particularly at a time when collective responsibility remains vital to the country’s progress.
In addition, citizens were advised to celebrate the occasion responsibly and extend acts of kindness to vulnerable members of society, reinforcing the spirit of giving associated with Eid celebrations.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peaceful coexistence among Nigerians, emphasising the importance of harmony and mutual respect in strengthening national cohesion.
Eid-el-Fitr is one of the most significant celebrations in Islam, observed globally to mark the end of Ramadan, a month dedicated to fasting, prayer and reflection.
