AMVCA 2023 - ShowMax Originals Bags 22 Nomination

Showmax has confirmed key dates for the closure of its standalone streaming platform, signalling a major shift in South Africa’s entertainment landscape. The company will stop accepting subscription renewals and voucher redemptions from 31 March 2026, while new subscriptions and renewals will no longer be available from 1 April 2026.

Existing subscribers will retain access to content until their subscriptions expire or until 30 April 2026, whichever comes first. This transition is part of a strategic move to integrate Showmax Originals and other content into DStv Stream, consolidating the company’s streaming services into a single, broader platform.

Brandspur Banking News Desk reports that this move is designed to create a unified streaming ecosystem while maintaining the strong performance of local content. Recent shows, including Die Kantoor and Diep City, will be accessible on DStv Stream, ensuring continuity for South African audiences.

The shift raises potential concerns regarding pricing, as Showmax built its reputation on affordability, and the new platform may carry higher subscription costs. Despite these questions, the company continues to demonstrate success in the local media sector. At the 2026 South African Film and Television Awards in Johannesburg, MultiChoice Group won 48 awards across scripted, reality, documentary, and lifestyle categories, highlighting the cultural impact of its productions.

Showmax has reassured users to continue streaming as usual during the migration period, with detailed guidance on transitioning to DStv Stream expected in the coming weeks. The consolidation reflects a growing trend toward centralised digital media offerings in South Africa, aiming to enhance content accessibility and overall user experience.
