Lagos, Nigeria – OpenAI, the creator of the globally popular ChatGPT, has officially discontinued its Sora video-generation tool, effectively ending a planned $1 billion collaboration with Walt Disney Co.
Brandspur Technology News reports that the shutdown was announced on March 24, 2026, via a post from the Sora team on X, confirming the immediate halt of the AI video project. Sources indicated that Disney executives were informed only 30 minutes after a scheduled meeting, highlighting the sudden nature of the decision.
The Sora team acknowledged the impact on creators and users who had developed communities around the platform, stating, “We’re saying goodbye to the Sora app. To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you. What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing. We’ll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work.”
OpenAI’s move signals a strategic pivot away from AI-powered video generation, focusing instead on areas with higher commercial viability. The company is prioritising robotics, enterprise AI solutions, and the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI). This shift includes consolidating multiple services into a unified super-app for both individual users and corporate clients.
Brandspur Technology News further notes that the decision coincides with internal restructuring, including leadership changes: Fidji Simo’s role now centres on AGI deployment, while CEO Sam Altman has reduced direct oversight of safety and security operations. The company faces intensifying competition in the AI space, particularly from Anthropic and other firms whose coding-focused tools are gaining adoption among enterprise users and developers.
The shutdown also reflects operational challenges, including high computational demands that constrained the scalability of Sora and diverted resources from other strategic projects. Introduced in February 2024, Sora entered the rapidly growing AI video-generation market, alongside competitors such as Google and Meta Platforms. The platform aimed to revolutionise the film and media industry by allowing users to generate cinematic-quality videos from simple text prompts.
Despite its promising potential, Sora’s closure underscores the difficulties of scaling AI video technology amid profitability pressures, infrastructure costs, and market competition. Disney, while disappointed, expressed respect for OpenAI’s decision and affirmed openness to explore alternative collaboration opportunities in the future.
The shutdown of Sora marks a significant turning point for OpenAI, highlighting the company’s focus on creating a more integrated, commercially sustainable AI ecosystem that balances innovation with strategic resource allocation.
