Bharti Airtel has reached a major milestone after surpassing 650 million mobile subscribers worldwide, positioning the company as the second largest telecommunications operator globally by customer base.
The telecom giant disclosed the development in a statement, highlighting its expansive footprint across multiple regions and its continued growth across emerging and established markets.
The company noted that its network currently serves over two billion people globally, including more than 179 million customers across 14 African countries, reflecting its strong presence on the continent.
Brandspur Brand News reports that the milestone underscores Airtel’s ability to scale its operations efficiently while maintaining service delivery across diverse markets driven by sustained investment and innovation.
According to the company, crossing the 650 million subscriber mark reflects the strength of its infrastructure, operational capacity, and its commitment to delivering consistent connectivity experiences to customers worldwide.
In Nigeria, Airtel has significantly expanded its network infrastructure, increasing its number of operational sites from about 13,000 to nearly 17,200 within a three-year period.
The company added that over 1,500 new sites were deployed in the past year alone to boost network capacity in high-demand locations and extend coverage to previously underserved communities.
Industry data from the Nigerian Communications Commission indicates that Nigeria recorded over 145,000 base stations as of December 2025, with Airtel accounting for a substantial share of the country’s telecom infrastructure.
Airtel also revealed plans to strengthen internet connectivity through the development of a second submarine cable landing point in Akwa Ibom State as part of the broader 2Africa cable system rollout aimed at improving network resilience and speed nationwide.
Nigeria’s telecommunications market continues to be dominated by MTN Nigeria and Airtel Nigeria, both of which lead in subscriber numbers and revenue generation within the sector.
Market data shows MTN Nigeria retains the largest market share, while Airtel Nigeria holds the second position, with both companies contributing significantly to the sector’s multi-trillion-naira revenue performance.
Despite the growth, the sector continues to face challenges related to service quality, including network congestion and inconsistent data speeds, which have attracted increased regulatory attention.
The Nigerian Communications Commission recently directed telecom operators to compensate subscribers in areas where service quality falls below required standards, reinforcing stricter compliance with established performance benchmarks.
