A new wave of digital storytelling is taking centre stage as AFDA unveils its Micro-Drama Storytelling Short Course, designed to equip creators with skills for the fast-growing short-form content economy. The programme responds to a global shift where audiences increasingly consume stories on mobile devices, with vertical video formats dominating platforms and driving higher engagement rates.
Industry data highlights the scale of this transformation, with platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts generating billions of daily views. Short-form videos now outperform traditional formats in engagement and completion rates, while micro-series storytelling is emerging as one of the fastest-growing segments in digital entertainment, fuelled by demand for quick, emotionally engaging narratives.
The four-week hybrid course combines online learning with hands-on production training, guiding participants from concept development to final screening of their own vertical drama projects. Brandspur Brand News reports that the programme is open to aspiring filmmakers, content creators and entrepreneurs, with no prior experience required, as the institution positions the course as a gateway into the expanding global creator economy.
With projections placing the creator economy at nearly $900bn by 2032, AFDA’s latest offering reflects a broader industry push towards mobile-first storytelling. Experts say the rise of short-form video is reshaping how stories are produced, consumed and monetised, making digital fluency an essential skill for the next generation of creatives.
