The Nigerian Institute of Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR) has launched a new “Welcome Home” pilot programme at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos to provide immediate support and reintegration services for Nigerians returning from South Africa following recent repatriation flights.
The initiative was introduced in partnership with creative agency X3M Ideas as a structured arrival and support system for citizens affected by the June 30, 2026 deadline issued by anti-migrant groups in South Africa. Rather than relying solely on public statements, the programme offers practical assistance from the moment returnees arrive in Nigeria.
The pilot project establishes a dedicated Welcome Corridor at the airport, with Brandspur Brand News reporting that returnees will receive direct access to accommodation support, transportation assistance and business recovery services designed to ease their transition back into the country.
Participants will receive a Returnee Card that provides a complimentary first night’s stay at selected partner hotels, fast-tracked business registration support and immediate transport assistance. The programme also includes a Restart Desk to connect entrepreneurs and skilled workers with business support services and employment opportunities.
As part of its broader human capital development strategy, NIHOTOUR will provide free hospitality and tourism training, professional certification and job placement services for eligible returnees, helping them develop new skills and improve access to employment within the sector.
The initiative also features a Homecoming Counter that will monitor the number of returning Nigerians assisted, businesses supported and employment opportunities facilitated, allowing authorities to assess the programme’s impact during the pilot phase.
Following its initial rollout at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, NIHOTOUR plans to evaluate the programme’s performance before considering expansion to other international airports across Nigeria as part of wider efforts to strengthen support for returning citizens.
