
South Korea has recorded a nearly 40 per cent drop in voice phishing cases following tougher government measures that combine artificial intelligence, rapid phone-number blocking and stronger international cooperation to tackle financial fraud.
Official figures showed that 12,554 voice phishing cases were recorded between October 2025 and July 2026, representing a 39.9 per cent decline compared with the corresponding period a year earlier.
The financial impact also fell sharply. Losses linked to the scams dropped by 43.2 per cent to 632.4 billion won, equivalent to about $462.5 million, according to figures released by the South Korean prime minister’s office.
Brandspur Brand News reports that the improvement followed the creation of a special anti-voice phishing task force in August 2025 as authorities moved to strengthen their response to increasingly sophisticated fraud schemes.
Among the measures introduced was an artificial intelligence-based warning system designed to help detect suspicious activity. Authorities also strengthened procedures for urgently blocking telephone numbers associated with voice phishing operations and expanded cooperation with international partners.
The impact became noticeable from October 2025. That month, reported cases fell 32.8 per cent from a year earlier to 1,226, reversing the upward trend recorded through September.
The decline continued for 10 consecutive months through July 2026, suggesting that the government’s combined prevention and enforcement measures have had a sustained impact rather than producing a short-term fall in reported incidents.
Voice phishing typically involves criminals impersonating trusted institutions or individuals over the telephone to deceive victims into transferring money or disclosing sensitive financial information. The scams can leave victims facing significant financial losses before fraudulent transactions are detected.
South Korea’s latest figures highlight the growing role technology can play in fighting such crimes, particularly as fraudsters increasingly exploit telecommunications and digital financial services to reach potential victims.
The results also offer a relevant example for countries confronting persistent electronic and impersonation fraud, showing how faster intervention, technology-driven detection and coordinated enforcement can help reduce both the number of successful scams and the financial damage suffered by victims.
