Lebara Nigeria Begins Commercial Operations, Enters Mobile Market As Second MVNO

Lebara Nigeria has commenced commercial operations, becoming the latest telecommunications company to enter Nigeria’s highly competitive mobile market.

The Nigerian subsidiary of London based mobile virtual network operator, Lebara Group, will provide mobile services without owning the network infrastructure used to connect its customers. Instead, the company will operate on Airtel Nigeria’s network as it builds its presence around digital products, customer experience and other mobile services.

The entry marks Lebara Group’s first move into the African market and makes Lebara Nigeria the second mobile virtual network operator to commence commercial services under Nigeria’s regulatory framework introduced in 2022. Brandspur Brand News reports that Vitel Wireless became the first MVNO to launch commercially under the framework when it began operations in October 2025.

Lebara is entering an industry currently led by MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom and 9mobile, which operate the major mobile networks and distribution infrastructure serving consumers across the country.

Unlike the established operators, Lebara does not need to build and maintain its own nationwide network infrastructure. Its model allows the company to provide mobile services using an existing operator’s network while directing investment towards areas such as digital services and customer experience.

The launch also signals the continued development of Nigeria’s MVNO segment, which allows new telecommunications providers to compete by using the infrastructure of established network operators rather than duplicating the costly process of building nationwide networks.

For Nigerian consumers, the arrival of another mobile service provider creates an additional option in a market where network coverage, pricing, reliability and customer service remain important considerations.

Lebara Group, which is headquartered in London, has now extended its operations into a new continent through its Nigerian subsidiary. Its commercial launch adds another international brand to Nigeria’s expanding telecommunications landscape.

With Lebara joining Vitel Wireless as the second MVNO to begin commercial operations under the 2022 framework, Nigeria’s mobile market is moving beyond competition solely among traditional network operators to include businesses built around alternative service and technology models.
