0

…Set To Host African Peace Award 2022 in London

African Peace Magazine and its strategic partner, the Centre for Peace and Conflict Management in Africa has welcomed its full accreditation to monitor and observe the 2022 Angolan General Elections.

The African Peace Magazine delegation is led by the Editor-in-Chief Noah Ajare, Group editor/Media Consultant Austin Otah, International correspondent, Nympha Chinenye Nzeribe, Managing Editor, Arinola Sulaimon, Associate Editor, Barakat Yakubu, and several others to Angola to monitor the elections.

The African Peace Magazine’s active participation in the elections will include on-the-spot live reports, massive interviews [Pre and Post-Election], to measure the confidence of the public towards the elections while collating the opinion of voters.

Editor-in-Chief of the African Peace Magazine, Noah Ajare in a statement said elections are typically critical to the economic development and political stability of the country because they usher in new leaders. It is so vital because it is one of the core determinants of a peaceful state.

He noted that globally, elections are critical to the socio-economic development of any nation. Media publicity before and after the elections goes a long way in ensuring the credibility, acceptability and international recognition true nature of the electoral processes. More importantly, media reports, if well managed can prevent post-election violence.

In Angola, campaigns for the Presidential and National Assembly elections 2022 started officially on the 24th of July 2022 and ended on the 20th of August 2022. However, the political landscape has been focused on the ruling party and the opposition party.

Like most African countries, Angola is emerging from the economic crises occasioned by COVID 19, and the fall in oil prices. And for many Angolans, this election is a defining moment that will shape the history of the oil-rich, southwestern African country. On August 24, Angolan political parties would face their tightest race ever in a general election. More than fourteen million registered voters are expected to participate in this year’s presidential and legislative elections in Angola.

Angola’s ruling party, the movimento Popular de Libertacao de Angola (MPLA), is currently taking lead, having been in power since Angola gained her independence in 1975 from Portugal.

Joao Lourenço, who is the incumbent President, has been commended for allowing more political opening than all his predecessors. Other innovative development credited to the President, Joao Lourenco includes allowing diaspora voting in more than 13 Countries, use of electronic voting, electronic transmission of results and several others.

The opposition is led by Adalberto Costa Junior, from the Uniao Nacional para a independencia Total de Angola (UNITA).

“While the world watches keenly to see how the process would be managed, the incumbent has promised to deliver on Angolan dreams. However, there are many underlying questions— will the people give him another chance? Are the National Electoral Commission fully ready? These and more are what we’re yet to find out and African Peace Magazine UK is on ground to physically monitor the Elections and report the developments live from all the provinces and poll booths,” Noah Ajare said.

The African Peace Magazine delegation will also attend the International African Energy, Oil and Gas Summit 2022, with the theme Harnessing The Potential For Inclusive Energy Transition And A Sustainable Future, Scheduled to hold in Angola from the 22nd of October 2022.

Angola holds abundant untapped oil and gas resources estimated at 9 billion barrels of proven crude oil reserves and 11 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas reserves. The country currently produces approximately 1.16 million barrels of oil per day (bpd) but hit as high as 2 million barrels of oil per day (bpd) by 2010 during prosperous oil production years. Group Tasks LIRS On Whistle-Blower Initiative; Hails Subair-Led Management On Staff Welfare

0

A civil society organisation, Vanguard for Transparency and Accountability, has described the recently launched Whistle-Blower Initiative of the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service, as an exemplary boost to the anti-corruption crusade, as it lauded the Ayodele Subair-led LIRS management for sustaining its pace-setting records in tax management reforms in Nigeria.

The President of the anti-corruption crusade group, Paulycap Nnabuogor, said in a press statement, that the initiative which subjects the operations of LIRS to public scrutiny, will promote openness, accountability and ultimately enhance citizens’ participation in governance, boosting their trust in the activities of a sensitive agency of government.

Nnabuogor said the anti-corruption group is convinced that the initiative is targeted at strengthening and re-invigorating frontiers in the fight against fraud and corruption and puts both the management and the staff of the agency on their toes to deliver their statutory roles in compliance with the global best practices.

He said, “We are not particularly surprised that the Lagos State government chose the LIRS as a pilot scheme for its Speak Up programme because of the reforms the Subair-led management of the revenue agency had carried out internally to boost its operations and enhance the capacity of its workforce. Undoubtedly, this initiative shows that the activities of civil society organisations like ours are beginning to bear fruit and Nigeria is the ultimate winner.

“Before the birth of the Whistle-Blower Initiative, we were aware of the efforts of the LIRS management to promote accountability within the system and the importance Subair particularly attached to the welfare of his staff. Our findings show that the LIRS maintained the payment of performance allowances to the staff, and doesn’t joke with the prompt release of other pay including wardrobe allowances, particularly to the staff at both the legal and relationships units all geared towards enhancement of performance.

“More so, we found out that the decision to introduce a computer-based test for promotion, which is handled by independent assessors, has encouraged high-fliers within the system to grow rapidly and underlined why the agency has maintained its status as the best-performing tax collecting board in the country. Subair’s Award of Recognition by the Joint Tax Board of Nigeria is a testimony of his achievements as the agency has always met its revenue target even during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Meanwhile, Subair restated the commitment of the LIRS management to the welfare of its staff, strengthened by the belief that a motivated workforce will lead to greater productivity.

He said.” We take our workforce’s welfare and career development as a key metric in our journey to consistently deliver our statutory role as a revenue agency. In 2019, we approved a 70% salary increase for staff from Assistant Revenue Manager and below, and a 50% increase for Revenue Manager and above. This is the most significant salary review in the Agency to date. A total of 3,608 members of staff were promoted between 2017 to 2021 and all our staff do not pay for standard medical services.

“We also ensure that performance bonuses are paid to all staff, based on clearly defined and documented processes while Union dues are remitted timely and correctly with all other statutory deductions such as pensions.”

He added that the consequential adjustment of salaries has been agreed upon in principle and payment modalities are currently being worked out by management, stressing that all are geared toward ensuring that the agency serves the people of Lagos State effectively.

Henkel Nigeria Honors World Humanitarian Day

0

Henkel Nigeria observes World Humanitarian Day as part of its mission to assist people in dealing with various challenges and problems that make them vulnerable.

This event honors humanitarian workers and those who have died while working for humanitarian causes. #TheHumanRace is the theme for 2022, and it represents the global urgency for climate action in solidarity with those who need it the most.

While Nigeria suffers from the effects of climate change, a more pressing humanitarian crisis for the country is rising youth unemployment, which must be addressed with a concerted effort. Insurgency in northeast Nigeria has also displaced the population, sending much of the young population south in search of work in cities. This teeming young population requires.

One way Henkel Nigeria is helping to address youth unemployment is through its Street-Smart Entrepreneurs (SSE) programme. Under the SSE, the company supports local entrepreneurs by transforming some unemployed youths into entrepreneurs as it develops the economy and host communities. It is a self-sustaining initiative where the beneficiaries are consistently engaged. This means beneficiaries of SSE are trained and equipped with the knowledge to be entrepreneurs and provided with tools for business, across their different locations.

Rajat Kapur, Managing Director, Henkel Nigeria, said the initiative responds to the need for human capital development through entrepreneurial skills training that will in turn create jobs for youths.

Similarly, Henkel introduces children to the fascinating world of science through its Researchers’ World educational initiative. Since the programs’ inception in April 2011 at Henkel’s Düsseldorf headquarters, over 62,000 children from all over the world have participated. There are “Forscherwelt projects” in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, India, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Russia, South Korea, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States, as well as Nigeria.

The program began in November 2021 in Oyo State, Nigeria’s southwestern state, and will conclude in August 2022. In September 2022, Researcher’s World will enter Lagos State as part of Phase 2 of the strategy.

The company’s commitment to giving back as a responsible corporate citizen and supporting the host community on humanitarian causes is the corporate philosophy underlying this humanitarian act.

Every August 19, for the past eleven years, the world has remembered, raised awareness, rallied support, and amplified the stories of heroes on the front lines of humanitarian efforts.
