The Best Cheap Android Phones

0

So you want to buy a cheap Android phone, but you’re overwhelmed by the countless options out there. Let us point you in the right direction.

First, though, you should figure out if you even want to buy a midrange or low-end phone. Getting a less-expensive device usually means giving up some features, like a higher-than-60 Hz display refresh rate, quick charging, mmWave 5G, and wireless charging. On the other hand, you won’t be paying $1,000 for a top-of-the-line device.

You should pay close attention to the things some manufacturers skimp out on, like update plans, a decent camera, cutting-edge performance, NFC support, and support for newer versions of Wi-Fi.

Luckily, our favorite cheaper phones manage to hold on to a few items from this list.

A note on 5G

There’s also a good chance you’ll miss out on some forms of 5G, but don’t let that affect your purchasing decision. Many carriers have started rebranding traditionally 4G technologies as “5G,” so you have to be really plugged in to know the difference. And you might catch some carriers, like Verizon, offering a 5G mmWave upsell on a phone for an extra $50, which is the case for the Pixel 6a.

mmWave is the super-fast version of 5G responsible for record-breaking speed tests, but you need to run that speed test directly under a mmWave installation. In the real world, mmWave covers somewhere around 1 percent of carrier networks. The more prevalent “5G” is sometimes slower than 4G. So take our advice: Don’t pay an extra cent for any kind of “5G.”

The Ars Pick

The $449 Google Pixel 6a—sucking all the air out of the room

For a cheap Android device, you can’t do any better than the Pixel 6a. The Pixel A series is usually great, but the line is kicking things up a notch this year with the inclusion of a flagship-class system-on-a-chip (SoC). Google has packed its midrange $449 smartphone with the same Google Tensor SoC you’ll find in the $600 and $900 Pixel 6 phones. That means this little device has almost the same performance as many flagships. In our full review, you’ll see Pixel 6a benchmarks that are identical to the Pixel 6 in CPU, GPU, and storage metrics.

In addition to not making you compromise on performance, the Pixel 6a offers a ton of other benefits you normally wouldn’t expect in the midrange market. Google’s Android update program might not be the best anymore, but it’s pretty good for a midrange phone—you’ll get three years of major OS updates and five years of security updates. Most of the other phones in this class have nothing to offer when it comes to software updates.

Companies don’t really invest much money in the camera hardware for midrange phones, but the good news is that Google’s camera software can deliver fantastic results even from the cheap, aging 12.2 MP Sony IMX363 on the Pixel 6a. This is the same sensor from the Pixel 2, 3, 4, and 5, and it’s reliably one of the best cameras you can get at this price.

A big-ticket item is the Pixel’s IP67 water resistance rating. This means you can submerge the phone in water for 30 minutes and it should be OK. It’s great to not have to worry about using a phone with wet hands—or being able to just wash the phone in the sink when it gets dirty. It’s a good feature for peace of mind, and you usually won’t find it on cheaper devices.

The display on cheaper phones will always be a compromise, and we think Google makes the right choice with the 6a’s screen. The display is a 60 Hz OLED, while some phones in the midrange market opt for 90 Hz LCDs. We like the 60 Hz OLED because these cheap phones often can’t render anything at 90 fps anyway. Also, using OLED over LCD means Google can deliver an always-on display.

An always-on display is one of the best features you can get on an Android phone. When the screen is supposed to be “off,” it goes into a low-power mode instead and displays the time and any notifications you may get. OLED lets you do this without draining too much of the battery, and it’s great to always be able to see the two most frequently checked items on a phone without even touching it.

Another surprise at this price point is Wi-Fi 6E compatibility. If you buy a new access point, this compatibility will let you jump on the newly available 6 GHz spectrum for home Wi-Fi, which is great if you live close to your neighbors and have Wi-Fi problems. Everyone has to share the airways, and in dense areas, Wi-Fi tends to fall over due to a lack of spectrum.

New 6 GHz gear will let you jump into a slice of spectrum that your non-early-adaptor neighbors aren’t using, which should greatly improve your connectivity. 6E support is basically exclusive to flagship phones right now, and this is a nice perk of getting a device with a Tensor chip.

Are Debt Financings The New Venture Round For Fintechs Startups?

Last week, I wrote about Founderpath, an Austin-based company that offers debt financing to B2B startups.

As I started thinking about debt and credit facilities as increasingly attractive alternatives for startups who are seeking capital — especially during a downturn such as the one we are currently experiencing — I realized that the number of companies that were securing debt capital or credit facilities appeared to be on the rise. This could be for any number of reasons. Some founders might be struggling to raise venture dollars, while others don’t want to — preferring not to dilute ownership.

On August 8, Mexico City–based expense management startup Clara announced it had been approved for financing from Goldman Sachs for up to $150 million. The facility, it said, would allow Clara to continue to grow its corporate card, accounts payables and short-term financing offerings for businesses in LatAm. The company says it’s currently working with over 5,000 businesses across Mexico, Brazil and Colombia with ambitions to double that number by year’s end. Notably, Clara was believed to be valued at about $130 million at the time of a $30 million raise in May of 2021. Just eight months later, it had raised a Coatue-led $70 million Series B and achieved unicorn status.

Here in the U.S., Yieldstreet announced on August 11 that it had secured a $400 million warehouse facility from Monroe Capital LLC. A spokesperson from the alternative investment startup told me that the financing is the largest of its kind to date for Yieldstreet. In June of 2021, I covered Yieldstreet’s $100 million Series C at “near unicorn” status. In announcing its latest financing, the company said it has had more than 400,000 users since its 2015 inception and more than $3 billion in funding across an ever-evolving suite of investment products. The spokesperson also told me: “This isn’t normal corporate debt — it uses a warehouse facility, which means it is targeted to support the creation of new funds and products for Yieldstreet’s platform — growing the number of available investments for users, rather than general ops or expenses.”

A quick note about the difference between warehouse facilities and debt financings — debt is lending capital for operating reasons. Warehouse facilities are essentially a line of credit.  (Thanks to TC+ editor and resident finance expert Alex Wilhelm for the lesson.)

Healy Jones, VP of FP&A at Kruze Consulting, noticed my recent tweet about seeing a lot of debt financings and shared the following via email:

“Lots of reasons this is happening, but a big one is the drop in equity valuations is driving founders to find less dilutive ways to extend runway in the hopes that they can grow into at least a flat round.”

Kruze COO Scott Orn, who used to be a partner at a venture debt fund, added his own thoughts via email:

  • You have to plan ahead for venture debt. Put it in place relatively soon after an equity financing. That way there is no adverse selection for the lenders; everyone (founders, VCs and lenders) around the table is happy at that time. If you try to put something in place with less than six months of cash, you will not be able to get debt. If you put it in place after an equity round, you can draw it down way into the future — that’s called a forward commitment/drawdown. That gives the startup a lot of optionality.
  • It’s super important to understand all the terms. Often, founders don’t realize there are things like funding MACs, investor abandonment clauses, etc. These terms can be used by the lender to block the startup from either drawing down the money or creating a default after the money has been drawn. Either way, the company is in trouble and can’t count on the capital. So you really need to know your lender, have your VCs know your lender and pay attention to your terms. This is why we created the Sample Venture Debt Term Sheet, to explain all the terms.
  • Don’t borrow your own money. Often lenders will structure a deal with a lot of covenants, including minimum cash requirements. For example, they will lend you $4 million if you keep $2 million in the bank at all times. In that case, you’re really only getting $2 million of new capital. Furthermore, the threat of an investor abandonment or MAC clause can keep you from really using the money as well.
    • While startup interest in venture debt is up a lot, lenders are getting more conservative. Across the board, startups are asking us about venture debt way more often. Simultaneously, when I talk to the lenders, they are reducing the dollar sizes of new commitments, reducing interest-only periods, asking for more warrants and being much more picky about which startups to lend capital to.

On my end, I know of at least two other fintechs planning to announce debt raises and/or credit facilities in coming weeks. So, this definitely feels like a trend.

Again, Angola Overtakes Nigeria In Oil Production

Angola has again produced more crude oil than Nigeria for the third consecutive month, as Africa’s biggest economy lost 74,000 barrels per day in July compared with the previous month of June.

In May and June, Angola produced more crude oil than Nigeria, despite an increase in the country’s output. OPEC’s monthly report for July showed that Nigeria’s oil production declined by 74,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 1.08 million bpd in July from 1.26 million in June, based on direct communication.

On its part, Angola’s oil production rose to 1.18 million bpd in July, up from 1.17 million bpd in June.

OPEC uses secondary sources to monitor its oil output, but also publishes a table of figures submitted by its member countries.

Nigeria recorded the second greatest decline in production among its OPEC peers in July, even though Angola’s also reduced, it still beat Nigeria in terms of barrels drilled.

“Crude oil output increased mainly in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Kuwait, while production in Venezuela and Angola declined,” the oil cartel said.
OPEC has cut its 2022 forecast for growth in world oil demand for a third time since April, citing the economic impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, high inflation and efforts to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

But the view from OPEC contrasts with that of the International Energy Agency (IEA), the adviser to industrialised countries, which earlier raised its 2022 demand growth outlook.

OPEC in a monthly report said it expects 2022 oil demand to rise by 3.1 million barrels per day (bpd), or 3.2 per cent, down 260,000 bpd from the previous forecast. The IEA raised its forecast by 380,000 bpd to 2.1 million bpd.

Oil use has rebounded from the worst of the pandemic and is set to exceed 2019 levels this year even after prices hit record highs. However, high prices and Chinese coronavirus outbreaks have eaten into OPEC’s 2022 growth projections.

“Global oil market fundamentals continued their strong recovery to pre-COVID-19 levels for most of the first half of 2022, albeit signs of slowing growth in the world economy and oil demand have emerged,” OPEC said in the report.

The international oil cartel cut its 2022 global economic growth forecast to 3.1 per cent from 3.5 per cent and trimmed next year to 3.1 per cent, saying that the prospect of further weakness remained.

“This is, however, still solid growth, when compared with pre-pandemic growth levels. Therefore, it is obvious that significant downside risk prevails,” OPEC said.
Oil prices held on to an earlier gain after the OPEC report was released, finding support from the IEA’s view on demand and trading above $98 a barrel at the weekend.

OPEC and allies, including Russia, known collectively as OPEC+, are ramping up oil output after record cuts were put in place as the pandemic took hold in 2020.

Presenting The More Effective, Accessible Smart Home With LG ThinQ

0

Thanks to several breakthrough innovations of recent decades, several home appliances can work in unison via NFC Tag, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to form the integrated home solutions that put the ‘smart’ in smart home.

With technology advancing so rapidly, the role of the smart home has evolved from simply providing basic functions to now offering subscription services and integrated care services that elevate people’s wellbeing.

Since debuting in 2017, LG’s ThinQ™ smart home solution has been helping people live more accessible, more comfortable everyday lives in multiple ways. With the advanced ThinQ platform controlling the home, consumers can set a routine that automates multiple appliances at once while being able to monitor them in real time remotely.

The comprehensive home assistant even comes with ThinQ Care, which identifies potential issues, and the ability to purchase supplies or replacements on the ThinQ store with ease.1

Let’s explore how LG ThinQ is bringing next-level convenience and smarter control to thousands, if not millions, of homes across the world.

Preparing meals has never been simpler

When arriving home exhausted, cooking may be the last thing on your mind. With ThinQ Recipe guiding you every step of the way, creating tasty, healthy dishes is less of a chore and more of a hobby.

To kick the cooking process off, ThinQ uses your preferences and dietary needs to recommend both trendy online recipes and LG Original Series recipes – prepared and tested by LG food scientists and chefs to unlock LG oven’s full potential.

But before cooking your selected recipe can start, do you have all the required ingredients? In collaboration with Amazon Fresh, Walmart, Walmart, Kroger, Target and Instacart, you can now make sure you’re never missing an item by ordering supplies from your favorite grocery store via the app.2 So, once you’re ready to cook, open up a video guide and follow the instructions.

Then put your creation in the LG InstaViewTM Oven, which is ready to go thanks to LG ThinQ having already sent over the temperature and cooking time that will cook it to perfection.

The only thing left to do after the food has been cooked and served is to make sure the room temperature is perfect for you by controlling the LG DUALCOOL air conditioner via the app. Now you can enjoy your perfectly home-cooked meal to the fullest.

Providing the smart home solutions everyone can use

To make sure everyone can experience a convenient, connected smart home, LG ThinQ has incorporated useful voice guides to provide better accessibility. Through voice recognition technology, elderly people or those unfamiliar with smartphone can directly speak to your Alexa, Google Assistant devices or directly to LG ThinQ app to give instant verbal feedback on device-related problems.

LG ThinQ-powered convenience is now available with most LG devices, including its well-known refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners as well as its Air Water Heat Pump (AWHP), WashTower™, ceiling fans and more. And since these appliances become more compatible with Google Assistant now in almost a hundred countries and Amazon Alexa in sixty-four, more people can get accurate information on their appliances in a matter of seconds.3

Joining Matter for a more integrated platform

What’s more, LG recently joined the Board of Directors of the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), the leading global organization for developing, evolving and promoting universal open standards for the Internet of Things (IoT). LG will lead the way in developing smart home ecosystems by actively participating in the development and standardization of Matter, the Alliance’s open-source IoT protocol for connecting smart home devices.

With LG ThinQ, every person, disability or no disability, can experience the smart homes that make daily life simpler and easier through innovative functions and state-of-the-art appliances.
