Sesame Street and SC Johnson Offer Lessons for Little Ones to Help Prevent Mosquito Bites

0

Beloved Muppets Characters Entertain and Teach with “1, 2, 3 Stay Away Mosquitoes”

Another mosquito season is approaching, and Sesame Street and SC Johnson are working together to raise awareness and share critical information about mosquito bite prevention. A education program called 1, 2, 3, features Muppet friends Grover, Ernie, The Count and Rosita, and provides free content to children and caregivers with tips to avoid mosquitoes that may carry disease and remove breeding grounds. It also offers age-appropriate information about the benefits of wearing protective clothing and repellent.

“Education on how to avoid bites is key to preventing mosquito-borne diseases like malaria, Zika and dengue fever,” said Kelly M. Semrau, Senior Vice President – Global Corporate Affairs, Communication and Sustainability at SC Johnson.  “It is vitally important for families to start thinking about the approaching mosquito season now, and 1, 2, 3 Stay Away Mosquitoes is a great place to begin.”

The materials, available in English and Spanish, include two online videos, activity sheets for children, and tips for parents on a digital toolkit at: www.sesamestreet.org/mosquito. The online information prompts parents to create mosquito-free places for children and provides helpful advice such as:

  • Mosquitoes love water and wet areas. Remove standing water from any place it collects, like flowerpots, drains, birdbaths, children’s pools, and roof gutters, and teach children not to play in puddles.
  • Make sure your home has screens on doors and windows. Even small holes can let in mosquitoes, so be sure to repair any tears in the screens. Children can help by playing “detective” to find any holes in need of repair!
  • Mosquito netting can also be used to protect strollers and infant carriers or when sleeping outdoors.
  • When outdoors, use personal repellent, following the label instructions, and wear light colored and long-sleeved clothing.

“It’s wonderful to partner with Sesame Workshop, a trusted voice for children and parents for decades,” added Semrau. “We are so proud to be a part of this effort.”

As a family company, SC Johnson believes in having a positive impact on communities and is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of people locally and globally. As part of this commitment, SC Johnson pledged to donate $15 million in resources to combat the rising global outbreak of mosquito-borne disease. To date, more than $8 million of OFF!® products and financial donations have been provided to organizations around the world, especially those in regions with high risk of mosquito-borne diseases like malaria, Zika, West Nile, chikungunya and dengue fever.

Located in Racine, Wisconsin near the company’s world headquarters, the SC Johnson Entomology Research Center (ERC) was established in 1957 and remains one of the world’s largest private, urban entomology research centers. For 60 years, SC Johnson researchers have developed products and solutions consumers can trust to protect them and their homes from household pests such as mosquitoes, cockroaches, ants, wasps and the common house fly. Researchers study all aspects of insect behavior, development and methods of insect control.

SC Johnson is a family company dedicated to innovative, high-quality products, excellence in the workplace and a long-term commitment to the environment and the communities in which it operates. Based in the USA, the company is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of household cleaning products and products for home storage, air care, pest control and shoe care, as well as professional products. The 131-year-old company, which generates $10 billion in sales, employs approximately 13,000 people globally and sells products in virtually every country around the world.

CAN NIGERIANS DO WITHOUT DSTV?

0

On Saturday, 1st of April 2017, Nigerian DSTV users were hit with a shocking announcement revealing the increase in subscription charges of every DSTV package by five percent with effect from 1st May 2017.

This marks the fifth time DSTV is increasing its subscription fee in Nigeria since its inception in 2009. From the information made available, the price of DSTV Premium has increased by 55 percent from N9,000 which it charged in 2009 to N13,980 in 2017 while that of DSTV Access has increased by 26 percent since 2009.

In defending this price increase in such a time of economic hardship, DSTV Nigeria released a statement blaming the increase on inflation and Forex restriction. However, it is no news that Forex restriction has been the problem of almost every company in Nigeria that does business using foreign currency.

“We announced last year that we would do everything possible to hold the price barring any extreme factors. However, all our content is purchased in dollars and although we have done everything possible to hold the prices even with the price of everything else going up, we are now left with no choice but to adjust our subscription prices from 1 May,” DSTV said in a press statement.

Over the years, MultiChoice Africa Limited, which offers video entertainment services in Africa through its digital satellite television service, DSTV, has been under constant attack by Nigerians either over subscription fees or content, and this year is not an exception. Most Nigerians feel robbed by this pay TV and its activities in the country due to its monopoly on certain programmes such as the English Premiership League rights. Apart from the price increase, they are currently under attack on social media for trying to remove a renowned Gospel TV station, Kingdom Africa, a channel that offers family friendly content with a very high moral benefits while they have decided to leave the Big Brother Naija (BB9ja) channel, which some Nigerians claim has little or no moral benefits.

In 2016, the Premier League announced that it had closed a deal valid for the 2016/17 and 2018/19 seasons with Econet Media, owned by a Zimbabwean tycoon, Strive Masiyiwa. Ventures Africa questioned if this was the end of DSTV but over a year later DSTV seems to remain the king of the park in Africa.

Following this recent announcement on price increase, many Nigerians have been calling for the boycott of DSTV while others have decided that they are going to pack up their DSTV decoders and begin a search for other pay TV services currently running in the country. This brings the question of if Nigerians can really do without DSTV.

Can Nigerians do without DSTV?

While scanning through Twitter which has recently become an even more powerful uniting tool, I stumbled across a tweet which suggested that Nigerians can actually put away their cable networks and make use of unlimited internet data bundles to watch whatever station they wished to watch or must have missed.

But how true can this be in Nigeria looking at the fact that Internet access in the country is very expensive? It could become a reality in Nigeria if Internet Service Providers (ISPs) decide to drop the price of their unlimited data bundles in order to help cut cost for Nigerians. If this is possible, Nigerians would be able to save more; instead of spending so much on mobile data, all they have to do is pay for unlimited data bundles which they could also use on their phones, laptops and HDTVs. In this case, the subscriber will only pay for what he or she watches as opposed to paying for what they didn’t watch – something which has been one of the greatest concerns of Nigerians who call for pay as you use DSTV subscriptions.

This is also a call to the telecommunication companies in Nigeria to take advantage of the current situation as an opportunity to increase the number of Internet Service Providers that dropped in February this year. According to the latest data released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Nigeria’s telecommunications networks lost 1,275,573 Internet users in February.

Even if some Nigerians claim to have ditched cable TV for the internet, we need to consider that once you ditch cable, your Internet connection will become the basic source of your media consumption, this means that you’ll need a very reliable Internet connection. And finding reliable Internet Service Providers can be quite the challenge.

But just in case any Nigerian decides to try this option he or she should make sure that their ISP supports super-high-speed bandwidth necessary for streaming high-definition and super-high-definition video. This is because, in some cases, you might need to upgrade your subscription to get a high bandwidth.

YouTube will now block ads on channels with under 10,000 views

YouTube is taking measures to help ensure its user-generated content doesn’t end up positioning ads by big brands next to questionable content. The social network will not allow ads on channels that have fewer than 10,000 views total, across all their posted videos. YouTube told The Wall Street Journal that the measure has been in development since November, and that it’s intended to block channels which steal content from other sources from deriving revenue from the platform.

YouTube is facing a significant backlash for displaying ads from partners against video containing racist and otherwise objectionable content. Google apologized for the mistake, and adapted its policies, but some major brands, including Coca-Cola, PepsiCo (which is rich, considering its subsequent Kendall Jenner snafu) and Walmart pulled advertising other than targeted search following reports by the WSJ of the ads being displayed against unsavory content.

Previously, YouTube has made participation in its advertising program relatively easy: Account owners can apply to run ads next to their videos and it turned out there was very little in the way of barriers to getting approved. YouTube’s system also automatically placed ads against content using algorithmic methods, meaning preventing this kind of thing on a case-by-case basis is a relatively difficult, if not impossible, task.

A 10,000 threshold allows a certain level of self-selection — videos that are obscure and offensive enough to never find much of an audience won’t be included, and it also likely narrows by a significant amount the pool of potential cases in need of human review.

Nigeria occupies 7th place on PoS transactions in Africa

Nigeria occupies seventh position among African countries where the use of point of sale (PoS) form part of transactions, Nigeria Communications Week has learnt.

According to a report by Indexmundi only 21 percent of total transactions in the country are done through the PoS device.

South Africa stands at the top with 91 percent followed by Ghana 80 percent while Tunisia is third with 79 percent. Other countries ahead of Nigeria are Egypt, Morocco and Kenya in that order.

According to Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the PoS density per 100,000 people in Nigeria is 13, while India’s is 67; Uganda, 453; Namibia, 338

The target for Nigeria, according to the bank, is to meet Brazil’s PoS deployment rate of 2,247 per 100,000 people by 2020.

The initiative would lead to GDP contributions and job creation with a ripple effect on the economy while boosting national pride and reducing exposure of national security in the area of espionage.

Kevin Chung of Avante International Technology, at the just concluded CashlessAfrica Expo, said that while the communication network and bandwidth are adequate, the data centres in the financial communities in Nigeria needs to upgrade from Tier 1-2 to Tier 3-4 to enable the cash-less economy.

Tunde Ogungbade, managing director, Global Accelerex Limited, said that cash places a huge toll on GDP and that in Nigeria cost of cash management is projected by CBN to be N250billion by 2020.

“There is high percentage of unbanked in the country and uneven access to money, these hobbles cashless initiative in the country.”

He added that a cashless future must serve society at large, and that it cannot be about corporate interest, governmental control or surveillance and monitoring. “It must be about providing endless consumer choice for payment”.

Ogungbade highlighted barriers to cashless future such as high rate of illiteracy, inadequate sensitization and education as well as inadequate instruments and channels.

He identified benefits of cashless future to include better access to capital for micro-merchants and small business, and increase instruments to drive economic growth and development.

He urged the sector’s regulator to implement policies and regulations that promote electronic payment acceptance, lowering of transaction cost and provision of alternative payment before penalizing the use of cash as well seek and explore innovation at all steps of the payment process.

Onajite Regha, executive secretary/CEO, E-Payment Providers Association of Nigeria (E-PPAN), said that operators of the payment system have worked so hard to match innovation with needs, and have battled tirelessly to ensure the integrity of the payment systems.

“In the same vein, our regulators have not left any stone unturned to ensure that our payment systems meet their desire to make it nationally utilized and internationally recognized. As an Association E-PPAN has remained the bridge between the providers, the regulators and the users. It has not been an easy ride but we can proudly say we have come a long way since 2012,” she said.

“So while there is still a lot of room for improvement, in my opinion we are deserving of a pat on the back in the implantation of the cashless society so far.”

Importers can clear vehicles, pay duty later – Customs

Vehicle dealers in the country will now enjoy the privilege of clearing their cars from the ports and paying the duty later going by a new policy approved by the Federal Government for the Nigeria Customs Service.

The implication of the new policy, according to the service, is that people can clear their vehicles from the ports and take them away for 28 days before paying the import duty on them.

The NCS had earlier said that it would issue licences for the establishment of inland bonded vehicle terminals across the country.

The establishment of inland bonded terminals means that dealers will not necessarily have to go to Lagos to clear their vehicles.

The Acting Public Relations Officer, NCS, Mr. Joseph Attah, who stated these on Thursday, said, “When a dealer imports his vehicles and he manifests them for destinations in the inland areas, the dealer will only provide some logistics and the Customs will escort them down to the terminal without paying the Customs duty yet.”

According to him, the aim of the policy is to ensure ease of doing automobile business and increase commercial activities by giving a boost to the economy.

Attah said the NCS was set to commence the issuance of licences to interested auto dealers or any person who wanted to operate bonded vehicle terminals.

He stated that the NCS would consider ownership of fenced landed space with designated building for Customs outpost within the terminal and a N50m bond after detailed study of the company’s profile before issuing licences to an applicant.

Apart from removing the burden of duty payment at the ports of discharge for the operator, he explained that there would be many positive multiplier effects of bonded terminals like the establishment of spare part shops.

Attah added that full Customs functions of examination, assessment for value and prevention of smuggling of products through any form of concealment in vehicles would not be compromised under the new regime.

He said, “Operators will be allowed to take delivery of their vehicles to their terminals under Customs escort and pay duty as the cars are bought within a 28-day grace period.

“Customs will only approach the dealers for duty payment at the expiration of the 28-day period as the operators now make sale from imported cars before duty payment at their bonded terminals.”

Engine Oil Specifications Explained – What Does It Mean?

What’s written on your oil bottle, and what does it mean?

This post may seem like going back to basics but I’m constantly surprised by the number of people who do not know, or understand, what is written on a bottle of oil, and therefore have no idea what they are buying/using.

To be blunt about the subject, if a bottle of oil does not contain the following basic information then DO NOT buy it! Look for something that does!

1) The purpose for which it is intended (i.e. Motor oil, Gear oil etc)

2) The viscosity (i.e. 10w40, 5w30 etc for Motor oils and 80w90, 75w90, etc for Gear oils)

3) The specifications that it meets (should contain both API and ACEA ratings)

4) The OEM Approvals that it carries and the codes (i.e. MB229.3, VW503.00, BMW LL01 etc)

Ignore the marketing blurb on the label – in many cases it’s meaningless and I’ll explain later what statements you should treat with some scepticism.

So, what does the above information mean and why is it important?

THE BASICS

All oils are intended for an application and in general are not interchangeable. You would not for example put an Automatic Transmission Oil or a Gear Oil in your engine! It’s important to know what the oil’s intended purpose is.

VISCOSITY

Most oils on the shelves today are “Multigrades”, which simply means that the oil falls into 2 viscosity grades (i.e. 10w-40 etc)

Multigrades were first developed some 50 years ago to avoid the old routine of using a thinner oil in winter and a thicker oil in summer.

In a 10w-40 for example the 10w bit (W = winter, not weight or watt or anything else for that matter) simply means that the oil must have a certain maximum viscosity/flow at low temperature. The lower the “W” number the better the oil’s cold temperature/cold start performance.

The 40 in a 10w-40 simply means that the oil must fall within certain viscosity limits at 100°C. This is a fixed limit and all oils that end in 40 must achieve these limits. Once again the lower the number, the thinner the oil: a 30 oil is thinner than a 40 oil at 100°C etc. Your handbook will specify whether a 30, 40 or 50 etc is required.

SPECIFICATIONS

Specifications are important as these indicate the performance of the oil and whether they have met or passed the latest tests, or whether the formulation is effectively obsolete or out of date. There are two specifications that you should look for on any oil bottle and these are API (American Petroleum Institute) and ACEA (Association des Constructeurs Europeens d’Automobiles) all good oils should contain both of these, and an understanding of what they mean is important

Oil Types, Weights & Viscosity FAQ

Is it ok to switch motor oil weights, for example, from a 5W-20 to a 10W-30?

It depends. Some vehicle manufacturers provide a range of recommended motor oil viscosity grades based on the outside temperature in which the car is driven. Other manufacturers recommend the use of only one motor oil viscosity grade. For best engine performance, always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations found in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.

Is it ok to use 5W-30 in a car if the owner’s manual calls for 5W-20?

It is not recommend to do this. Using a heavier grade than recommended may cause decrease in fuel economy, higher engine loads and eventually shortened engine life. Using a lighter grade than recommended may result in excessive mechanical wear and reduced engine life. For maximum engine performance, follow the recommended motor oil viscosity and maintenance schedule provided in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.

What does the “w” in a grade of motor oil stand for?

The “w” in motor oil stands for winter. The first number in the oil classification refers to a cold weather viscosity. The lower this number is, the less viscous your oil will be at low temperatures. For example, a 5W- motor oil will flow better at lower temperatures than a 15W- motor oil. The higher number, following the “w” refers to hot weather viscosity, or how fluid your oil is at hot temperatures. The higher the number, the thicker the oil at a specified temperature.

Is thicker oil better?

In some circumstances, thicker oil can be used to compensate for increased bearing clearances (gaps between bearing and rotating shaft) that have developed over the years. A large change in bearing clearances can result in poorer lubrication. For best performance always follow the recommendations for motor oil viscosity in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.

When does it make sense to use straight weight oil (SAE30) versus a multigrade oil (5W-30)?

Straight weight oil is never recommended for use in a system that requires a multi-viscosity oil. Straight weight oils are generally recommended for smaller engines or older vehicles that were made before multi-viscosity oils were produced.

Is switching types of motor oil (conventional, synthetic, etc.) harmful to my vehicle’s engine?

Conventional, synthetic blend, synthetic and high mileage motor oils are compatible and will not harm your vehicle’s engine. For maximum engine performance, follow the motor oil type recommendation provided in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.

Is it true that older cars must only use conventional oil?

No.
