Belgian brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) has announced plans to build a new brewery in Tanzania.

AB InBev is investing $100m in the new brewery in Dodoma, its fifth in Tanzania. When production starts in the second half of 2020, its annual capacity will be 1 million hectolitres. AB InBev will be competing against East African Breweries, Diageo’s Kenya-based operation.

The company says that Africa is one of its fastest-growing territories. In December 2017 it announced that it was building its fourth brewery in Nigeria, as well as launching Budweiser there, its leading brand. Nigeria is already a strong market for Diageo’s Guinness.

AB InBev invested $230m in expanding its plants in South Africa in 2017. South Africa is in the top 20 beer consumers per capita in the world. As well as introducing Budweiser into the market, it also plans to launch major African beer brands, such as Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro and Kenya’s Hero.

At the end of 2017, AB InBev reported a gross profit of over $35bn worldwide, which includes a gross profit of $5.7bn in the EMEA region.
