ATCON, ALTON Endorse Miss Telecom Nigeria

Two leading industry Stakeholders group in Nigeria’s telecoms industry, the Association Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria, (ATCON) and Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has endorsed the Miss Telecom Nigeria beauty pageant, an initiative of DFO Media Concept organized in conjunction with DAK Marketing Services Limited.

Speaking during a press conference held at the Main Auditorium, University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Wednesday, April 10, 2019, to announce the beauty contest, the Chief Organizer, Mr. Festus Ogana disclosed that the Miss Telecom Nigeria endorsement from both associations was given in 2018.

He said that the event is designed to celebrate the Nigerian telecom industry and also promote the Nigerian rich culture saying it is also to celebrate the Nigerian Telecommunications Industry for her good performance in the past 18 years.

He added that Miss Telecom Nigeria is about celebrating the rich Nigerian Culture in a very unique way.

The pageant titled “Miss Telecom Nigeria” is scheduled to hold on Saturday, July 27, 2019, and it targets Nigerian young ladies within the ages of 18-30 for participation.

He said that Nigeria is a colourful combination of cultures and landscapes, a place that fully embraces its African heritage and celebrates its diversity adding that the Nigerian telecom industry has helped in many diverse ways to boost the Nigerian cultural heritage.

Speaking further, Ogana said,” For close to two decades now, the Nigerian Telecommunications Industry received a boom with the introduction of the Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM). From then till date, everything we do in Nigeria revolves around the telecom industry.

“Everyone irrespective of age, social status and even literacy level, go about with mobile phones and connect to global debates. Telecommunications has positively changed our ways of living the way we think, relate and transact businesses. This has been made pronounced with the global acceptance of the social media which is powered by the IT/Telecom industry”, he concluded.

Also speaking at the press conference, the MD/Chief Executive Officer, DAK Marketing Services Limited, Elder Dede Kalu expressed his delight on the Miss Telecom Nigeria concept saying that the overall winner will represent the face of the Nigerian telecom industry.

In his words, “there is no gainsaying the fact that the Nigerian telecom industry has contributed immensely to Nigerian growth. The industry has supported the Nigerian culture of hard work and self-reliant as seen in the growth of many businesses that are an offshoot of the telecommunication industry. The industry has done so well and has significantly contributed over 5.5 per cent to Nigeria GDP and Economy in the country. Therefore, Miss Telecom will be presented as a pageant that celebrates our rich cultural beliefs and heritage and the Nigerian telecom industry”.

The Executive Secretary of the ALTON, Mr. Gbonlahan Awonuga in his speech while applauding the initiative said that the idea of having a beauty model to address the challenges and problem in the industry is long overdue saying that it will go a long way to lend voice to the advocacy objectives of ALTON.

He called on key stakeholders in the industry to support the quest of the organizers to add their voice to the full benefit of telecoms services still lacking in the country.

In his speech, while giving reasons for endorsing the Miss Telecom Nigeria, the ATCON Executive Secretary, Mr. Ajibola Olude said that the endorsement is based on the need to use broadband internet to promote the culture of the Nigeria nation.

He expressed confidence that with the successful hosting of the event, more of Nigeria’s cultural heritage will be on the internet noting that it was high time that the industry has a human face to speak about its challenges.

There will be auditioning in seven major cities in Nigeria including Calabar, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Owerri, Benin City, Abuja and Lagos. Interested contestants are expected to obtain their forms at these locations, according to Tony Ojini the National Coordinator, Miss Telecom Nigeria.
