As a child, every time there was an upcoming drama or dance presentation, I came alive. I would do everything I could to ensure I was selected to partake in the final presentation. As I grew older, it became clear that I had little or no time to take part in productions, so I comforted myself with watching such productions whenever I could.

August 1st, 2019 was one such day that I just enjoyed a great performance. It was one of the productions commemorating the 2019 edition of Eko Theatre Carnival. I experienced an intense nostalgic experience as I watch the “Gifted Steppers” deliver a stellar performance with their production titled “Asiko Ayin” at Day 2 of the ongoing Eko Theatre Carnival.

Directed by Oma Harrison, Asiko Ayin that means “Our Story”, used music and drama to tell the unique and true stories of the kid actors who have gone through life’s school-of-hard-knocks for their tender age. The drama also shed light on the struggles of the kids in the ghetto, encouraging them to rise well beyond, and above their humble beginnings.

Proudly supported by the MTN Foundation in partnership with the Crown Troupe of Africa, the event will take place across various locations in Lagos State over the course of this week, with the grand finale at Freedom Park on Sunday, August 4th, 2019. MTN Foundation’s Arts and Culture causes have for the last five years supported shows, plays, musicals and initiatives that aim to tell authentically Nigerian stories.
