In a report for CNN’s Innovate Africa, Juliet Ehimuan speaks about her role as the Country Director for Google Nigeria.
The tech sector is growing across Africa and Ehimuan talks about the industry’s importance, “I’ve always had a passion for Africa, and also I’ve always been very much in the role that technology can play in accelerating growth on the continent.”
However, the tech industry is an area where the gender gap persists. As a woman in an influential position, Ehiuman speaks about empowering others, “Technology is an enabler, and can create empowerment in virtually any sphere of life, any sector.”
Ehimuan goes on to tell CNN about how technology is helping to reinvigorate traditional industries, “I’ve seen farmers being able to boost their harvest by using digital tools, even to the point of emerging technologies of artificial intelligence and machine learning.”
There’s also been a rise in technology start-ups across the country. Ehimuan says these start-ups are creating, “Very inspiring applications and solutions to solve issues like financial inclusion for the unbanked, looking at solutions in agriculture, in healthcare.”
In her tenure as Country Director, a lot has changed at Google Nigeria and Ehimuan is keen to praise the people around her, “We’re still in early stages, but it’s been very encouraging to see the level of progress and some of the developments that are inspired by technology, and I’m very proud of the work that the team and I at Google have been able to do so far.”
