The TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, Africa’s largest men’s football championship series, kicked off on Monday. Simultaneously, Binance announced its official partnership with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as well as its official sponsorship of the AFCON 2021 tournament, becoming the event’s first crypto and blockchain sponsor.

Binance will also promote CAF’s social media content, which will include the assist of the day, assist of the week, and assist of the tournament, as part of this sponsorship. This content will include games from five Cameroonian cities across all six venues.

CAF general secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba was “delighted to welcome Binance as an official sponsor of the AFCON tournament this year.” According to Mosengo-Omba

AFCON 2021 kicks off the African sports calendar and will last until February 6.

Binance’s collaboration with CAF is part of an ongoing campaign to provide financial services to Africans who, according to the company, would otherwise have limited access to banks and other financial institutions. Binance claims that it has already provided over 541,000 Africans with free crypto classes.

Emmanuel Babalola, Binance’s Africa director, stated, “Football is the most popular sport in Africa.” He stated that they hope that this sponsorship will “confirm our mission to bring crypto mainstream across the continent.”
