Why Google Shut Down Cloud Gaming Platform, Google Stadia

Google has shut down its Stadia cloud-gaming service after failing to gain the required attention the company expected.

Brand Spur Nigeria reports that Stadia which was launched in November 2019 was inaccessible after 08:00 on Thursday, 19 January 2023.

The gaming cloud platform was designed to provide cloud gaming services to several devices such as PCs, Chromebooks, Macs, iPhones, and Ipads.

Rumors about Stadia not meeting up to expectations started in early 2021 after Google decided to shut down Stadia services which included Stadia game development studio, Stadia Games, and Stadia Games and Entertainment (SG&E), when it was just two years old.

Since the announcement was made by Google in September 2022, Google has done its best to refund anyone who made purchases on Satdia during the period it was running, this includes games, downloadable content, and controllers. This started around November and it is expected that Google would have completed the refunds by the time Stadia was shut down.

Stadia controllers which were designed to connect to Stadia servers over Wi-Fi, instead connecting directly to the console or PC, contain an unused Bluetooth chip Google intends to offer owners an option to redesign Stadia controllers to be able to function with Bluetooth to allow them to use the controllers with local machines once Stadia services are shut down.

Google released one final Stadia game, ” Worm Game” to mark the closure of the services, which was the game the developers used to test the services before it went live, however, all commerce had been shut down on the Stadia platform and Stadia stores, including in-game transactions. More details about the refund process for Satdia users are available on Google’s website.
