Bacardi Acquires Majority Stake In D'Usse Cognac

Bacardi and Shawn Carter, better known as American rapper Jay-Z, have announced a long-term agreement to renew their partnership with premium cognac brand D’Usse.

Carter’s company SCLiquor and a subsidiary of Bacardi collaborated in 2012 to launch D’Usse Cognac, and they were 50/50 equal owners prior to this acquisition. According to Bloomberg, Bacardi has now purchased the majority of SCLiquor’s stake in D’Usse, giving the spirits conglomerate 75.01% ownership of the company, with Carter retaining a significant stake in the brand.

“The next stage of this journey will further cement D’Usse’s legacy as one of the world’s most respected brands,” Carter said. “I am delighted to renew this collaboration with Bacardi.”

SCLiquor filed a $2.5 billion lawsuit in October 2022, prompting the acquisition. SCLiquor sought internal files from D’Usse, managed by Bacardi subsidiary Empire Investments, to investigate “Empire’s failings by exercising its statutory and common law rights to demand information from D’Usse,” according to a court document obtained by Bloomberg Law.

“The next step in this journey will solidify D’Usse’s legacy as one of the world’s most respected brands,” Carter said. “I am thrilled to continue working with Bacardi.”
