…WhatsApp Users Can Now Edit Sent Messages

Instant messaging platform, WhatsApp has announced a new feature on its messaging platform that allows users to edit their sent messages.

This announcement was made in a Facebook post shared by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. This new feature, which has long been requested by users of the instant messaging platform, allows users to modify messages sent in a chat within 15 minutes.

According to the post shared by Mark, WhatsApp users can access this setting by long-pressing the message sent and tapping on the edit option to edit the message. However, the edited message will show that it has been altered with the “edited” tag next to the time stamp, which would only be visible to the user who edits the message only, other users would not be able to see the previous versions of edited messages.

“We’re excited that you’ll now have more control over your chats, such as correcting misspellings or adding more context to a message. For this, within 15 minutes of sending the message, you have to tap and hold that message for a while and then select the option of ‘Edit’ from the menu,” Meta shared in a blog post.

Before now, WhatsApp users have had to delete sent messages or send corrections in a separate message. Last year, the instant messaging platform increased its time limit to delete a message from two days (48hrs) to 60hrs.

Whereas, WhatsApp’s competitors like Telegram and Signal have had the edit feature for a while now. The latest iOS 16 has also introduced the ability to edit and unsend messages on iMessage. Twitter has also introduced the edit button for paid last year but the time limit to alter a message is not as long as Telegram’s 48hr window.
