A contactless transit payment system that simplifies access and enables users to tap-in and tap-out with their debit card, credit card, or digital wallet was recently launched nationwide in the Netherlands.

All modes of public transportation in the nation, including trains, buses, metros, and trams, now accept OVpay, an open loop system made up of modernized hardware and cutting-edge software that guarantees secure payments and hassle-free travel across the entire nation.

In order to assist local banks with implementing mobility transaction processing rules, Mastercard collaborated with the joint public transportation companies and Translink during the development of OVpay. In order to advance the national innovations, the company also made sure the necessary software updates and components were installed.

The streamlined payment method improves navigation for transit users, including millions of Dutch citizens and foreign tourists. Riders can pay not only with a debit or credit card, but also with a smartphone or smartwatch that stores the card in a wallet.

With the exception of subscribers, OVpay eliminates the need for tickets or public transportation passes. As it increases efficiency, aids in the reduction of congestion, addresses environmental concerns, and improves livability, this improved public transit service is advantageous to both regular riders and tourists.

“We’re more than proud that we supported the Netherlands to be the first country in the world to make checking in with a debit and credit card in public transport nationally available. With this implementation we make public transport more accessible to the wider public,” says Jan-Willlem van der Schoot, Country Manager, Mastercard The Netherlands. “We see that many people faced hurdles when wanting to take public transport. From now on, no need to separately buy tickets or miss your train because the balance on your public transport card is too low. This has been an amazing team effort. So many people worked very hard on it during the last couple of years. It’s incredible to see how our efforts and those of our partners have made this happen.”
