Premier League, La Liga Season Kick Off On DStv, GOtv

Another action-packed season will begin on Friday in the English Premier League and Spanish La Liga, with intriguing fixtures spread across the weekend.

Premier League and European champions, Manchester City, will kick off the new Premier League season on Friday, when they visit Turf Moor to take on newly promoted side, Burnley.

Having lost the Community Shield to Arsenal, coached by his former assistant, Mikel Arteta, Pep Guardiola will face another of his stalwarts, Vincent Kompany, who is in charge at Burnley. Kompany captained Guardiola’s City team to two Premier League titles and has successfully coached Burnley back into the Premier League in his first full season with the club. He is set to become the first Belgian to coach a team in the Premier League. Burnley vs Man City will be broadcast live on SuperSport Premier League (DStv ch 203 and GOtv ch 66), at 8pm.

On Saturday, Premier League runner-up, Arsenal, will take Nottingham Forest at Emirates Stadium at 12:30pm, while last season’s top four entrants, Newcastle, will welcome Unai Emery’s Aston Villa to Saint James’ Park at 5:30pm. Both matches will be broadcast live on (DStv ch 203 and GOtv ch 66). Forest defeated Arsenal 1-0 in May, but have not won conservative matches against the Gunners since 1978. Newcastle are unbeaten in their last 14 home matches against Aston Villa.

The biggest match of the opening EPL week will be at Stamford Bridge on Sunday when Chelsea host Liverpool. The last five matches between both sides have ended in draws; three Premier League, one FA Cup and one EFL Cup. Their last four encounters have also ended goalless. Chelsea will be without one of their latest star signings, Christopher Nkunku, who recently underwent knee surgery, while Liverpool are expected to be at full complement. Liverpool are unbeaten in their opening Premier League match of the last 10 seasons (W8, D2), while Chelsea has amassed more first matchday points (66) than any other side in the Premier League. Catch the action live on (DStv ch 203 and GOtv ch 66), at 4:30pm.

The first Monday Night fixture of the season will see Manchester United welcome Wolves to Old Trafford, at 8pm on (DStv ch 203 and GOtv ch 66). Manchester United are undefeated in their last 18 home matches (W15 D3), while Wolves are winless in their last 8 away games.

In the Spanish LaLiga, Almeria and Rayo Vallecano will kick off the season at 6:30 pm on Friday, followed by a big match between Europa League champions Sevilla and Valencia, scheduled for 9pm. Both matches will be live on SuperSport LaLiga (DStv ch 204 and GOtv ch 32).

On Saturday, Athletic Club will host Real Madrid on SuperSport LaLiga (DStv ch 204 and GOtv ch 32), at 8:30pm, while defending champions, Barcelona will kick off their season away at Getafe on Sunday, also on SuperSport LaLiga (DStv ch 204 and GOtv ch 32), at 8:30pm.
