When I was growing up, I remember with fondness the enchanting voices of Ms. Onyeka Onwenu, Ms. Christy Essien Igbokwe, Ms. Brenda Fassie, Mama Mariam Makeba, and others. These exceptional women, each a towering figure in the world of music and beyond, serenaded our ears with evergreen songs that have stood the test of time. Today, we mourn the loss of Ms. Onyeka Onwenu, who has joined these iconic women in the chorus of the heavens.
These women have left indelible marks on the creative and political space. Ms. Onyeka Onwenu, often referred to as the “Elegant Stallion,” was not only a celebrated musician but also a dedicated public servant and advocate for social change. Her music often carried messages of hope, unity, and social justice, resonating deeply with many.
Ms. Christy Essien Igbokwe, known as the “Lady of Songs,” was a pioneer in the Nigerian music industry.
Her powerful voice and poignant lyrics addressed social issues, and she was instrumental in founding the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria, advocating for the rights and welfare of artists.
Ms. Brenda Fassie, the “Madonna of the Townships,” was a South African pop star whose music and activism played a significant role in the fight against apartheid. Her songs were not just entertainment; they were anthems of resistance and empowerment.
Mama Mariam Makeba, affectionately known as “Mama Africa,” used her global platform to highlight the struggles of her people and fight against racial injustice. Her music, rich with cultural heritage, brought African rhythms to the world stage and inspired many to join the cause for equality and human rights.
These women will be remembered not just for their contributions to music but also for their passionate commitment to social and political consciousness.
They used their platforms to drive awareness of issues affecting their communities and to inspire change. Their legacies are proof of the power of art as a catalyst for social transformation.
As we reflect on their outstanding well-lived lives, let us draw inspiration from their dedication and emulate their good works. Let us use our ‘voices’, in whatever capacity we can, to advocate for justice, equality, and positive change. By doing so, we honour their legacy and ensure that their contributions continue to resonate for generations to come.
