Instagram continues to lead the social media landscape in terms of user growth, even with Facebook and TikTok, which continue to lead in terms of total users.
Data from OnlyAccounts.io indicates that Instagram, a social networking app that allows users to share photos and videos, will continue to grow at the fastest rate for the next ten years, with 1.65 billion users by 2029, a 17.8% increase from its current count.
Instagram Overtakes Facebook in a Close Competition with a 0.7% User Growth Disparity Four years have passed since Instagram reached a significant milestone that was previously thought to be exclusive to social media behemoths like Facebook: one billion users.
Nevertheless, the platform’s user base has continued to grow, driven by Instagram’s visually stimulating content and a plethora of features like Stories, Reels, and Shoppable posts. These factors have allowed Instagram to overtake TikTok as the fastest-growing social media platform.
While TikTok has experienced the greatest increase in users over the last four years—spilling out four times as many users on a global scale—that will soon change, as a Statista Market Insights survey indicates that TikTok’s user growth is about to slow down significantly, allowing Instagram to take the lead.

Instagram’s global user base is expected to grow by approximately 250 million, or 17.8%, over the next five years—the largest increase among the top social media platforms. Facebook follows closely behind, with a growth rate of 17.1% during this time and approximately 480 million new users. Surprisingly, Snapchat came in third on this list with a projected growth of 15% and 95 million new users.
According to Statista, TikTok will add about 250 million new users and see its user base grow by 12% between 2024 and 2029. LinkedIn, X, Pinterest, and Reddit will grow at rates of 12%, 10%, 9%, and 8%, respectively.
Instagram leads in both user growth and average usage time; according to the Digital 2024 Global Statshot Report, nearly 17% of all social media users between the ages of 16 and 64 named Instagram their favourite social media platform, 1% more than Facebook and twice more than TikTok. Instagram users spend almost 17 hours per month on the app, four hours more than last year.
According to the same report available to BrandSpur digital news platform, TikTok was the clear winner in this category, with users spending an average of 31 hours and 43 minutes on the app in a month—eight hours more than they did a year earlier.
