Meta Officially Acquires Threads.com

As confirmed by a September 24 update to the Whois database, Meta has officially bought the domain Threads.com.

Users initially noticed this move in domain-related forums, where Meta’s Instagram is now listed as the site’s new registrar. At first, Threads.net was used by Meta to establish its social network, since Threads.com was then being used by a startup that offered an alternative to Slack.

Several companies approached the startup after the social network’s launch with an interest in purchasing the domain. Ultimately, Threads.com was purchased by Shopify in June for an unknown sum, BrandSpur news brand reports.

The company elected to sell this time around owing to shifting circumstances and a desire to join a larger organisation, according to a statement released at the time. The startup has previously turned down takeover bids. Since the debut of Meta’s Threads platform, the domain has drawn more interest, suggesting that Meta will eventually look to acquire it.

Launched as a direct rival to Twitter, which has since changed its name to X, Meta’s social network Threads debuted last year.

With more than 200 million users as of right now, the purchase of Threads.com might highlight the platform’s future development in Meta’s vision. Although the domain is not currently in use, it is anticipated to be integrated into Meta’s operations shortly, potentially providing the Threads social network with a new lease on life.
