
Google appointed Prabhakar Raghavan as the company’s new Chief Technologist in a significant reorganisation of its top team. Long-time Google executive Nick Fox will be replaced by Raghavan, who was previously the Senior Vice President in charge of Google Assistant, Geo, Ads, Commerce, and Payments products.
He received his Bachelor of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from U.C. Berkeley. In addition to being a former chief editor of the Journal of the ACM and a consulting professor of computer science at Stanford University, he is a fellow of the ACM and IEEE and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
The University of Bologna granted him a Laurea honoris causa in 2009. Raghavan created and oversaw Yahoo Labs, where he oversaw search and ad ranking, designed the ad marketplace, and eventually held the position of Chief Strategy Officer before joining Google. In addition, he was CTO of Verity and worked for IBM for 14 years in a variety of roles centred around algorithms, data mining, and machine learning.
According to a Google webpage accessed by the BrandSpur digital news platform, Raghavan is one of the world’s leading authorities on search and co-author of Randomised Algorithms and Introduction to Information Retrieval, two popular graduate texts on Algorithms and Search. He has researched algorithms, databases, and web searches for more than 20 years. He has also published more than 100 publications in a variety of subjects and is the owner of 20 issued patents, several of which deal with link analysis for web searches.

He previously oversaw engineering, products, and user experience as Vice President of Google Apps and Google Cloud.
Under his direction, Google’s Apps division grew from a collection of consumer apps to an enterprise solution that plays a significant role in the company’s Cloud business. Along with adding several machine intelligence capabilities to G Suite, such as Smart Reply, Smart Compose, and Drive Quick Access, he also helped Drive and Gmail to surpass one billion monthly users. These developments all resulted in appreciable gains in user experience.
He took over the Ads & Commerce teams in 2018 and was in charge of analytics, search, display, and video advertising, payments, retail, and travel. While staying true to the long-standing values of user trust and equitable value exchange between users, publishers, and advertisers, he has contributed to double-digit growth.
