TikTok has invested a lot of money and resources in the implementation of our ground-breaking data security program, Project Clover. We are happy to report that we have reached more noteworthy milestones in this €12 billion project today.
Project Clover is a program focused on constructing a safe enclave for European TikTok user data. This initiative will include a number of new measures to reinforce existing protections and further connect our entire approach to data governance with the notion of European data sovereignty.
According to Tiktok, our Norwegian data center’s first building is now operating, and the process of moving European user data from the US has started. After the opening of our first data center in Ireland last year, this is the second of our European data centers to go live. Servers in our US and Ireland data centers, as well as now in Norway, house our dedicated European enclave, where our European users’ data is kept by default.
We are also happy to report that NCC Group, Project Clover’s independent security supplier, has started ongoing security gateway environment monitoring to further safeguard our European data.
These further safeguards limit access to data by enforcing technical protocols through supervised security gateways, which restrict access to specific data kinds to authorized personnel only. For instance, new security measures have been in place since last summer to make sure that personnel working in China cannot access restricted data, including IP addresses and phone numbers, that are kept in our new European enclave. NCC Group has examined the gateways’ source code and will continue to examine any changes. TikTok will be able to recognize and react to possible security threats thanks to this ongoing, real-time monitoring.
Continuing, we have made tremendous strides in putting this ground-breaking project into action quickly since we initially revealed the specifics of Project Clover in 2023:
As accessed by the BrandSpur digital news platform, Titok went further to say our data security safeguards are now regularly monitored and verified by NCC Group, an independent security firm that offers a level of openness and accountability that is unparalleled among online platforms.
Data migration is in progress, and a separate European enclave has been established where our European user data is now automatically stored online in Norway and Ireland data centers.
More security measures were implemented to further limit access to our European user data. These restrictions are now being independently monitored by NCC Group.
Another significant turning point for TikTok and our community is the beginning of the data migration to our Norwegian data center and the ongoing independent monitoring of our data security by NCC Group. Thanks to the steps implemented under Project Clover, our 150 million-strong European community is safeguarded by data security that leads the industry.
