To commemorate World Savings Day 2024, 9 Payment Service Bank (9PSB), a prominent digital payment service provider dedicated to promoting financial inclusion in Nigeria, held a financial literacy and mentorship event for students at Fountain Heights Secondary School in Surulere, Lagos.

This program is in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) mandate that all financial institutions conduct financial literacy initiatives for the general public, youth, and students. The intention is to inculcate in Nigerians a culture of saving, financial discipline, and responsible money management.

Tolani Jemi-Alade, 9PSB’s Chief of Business Planning, Operations, and Resources, spoke to the students during the occasion and emphasised the value of developing sound financial practices, especially in light of current economic uncertainty. She emphasised the necessity of young people assimilating into the established financial system, saying: “We encourage every young person with a regular income to open a bank account as an essential step towards financial independence and savings for future needs. Money is necessary for day-to-day transactions and to manage unforeseen circumstances. Early planning is crucial, as these needs are inevitable.”

Jemi-Alade went on to emphasise the importance of World Savings Day, which is supported by CBN and aims to increase financial literacy and encourage a saving culture, especially among young people and students. For long-term financial security, she underlined the significance of comprehending and utilising formal financial services.

These views were mirrored by Oladimeji Saka, Lead for Retail Banking and Customer Acquisition at 9PSB, who pointed out to BrandSpur banking and finance news desk, that early financial knowledge is crucial. He suggested that parents are crucial in helping their kids navigate the stages of transition to maturity and in giving them the financial literacy they need to handle their money sensibly.

Speaking on behalf of Fountain Heights Secondary School’s principal, Vice Principal Academics Mr. Romanus Emegwakor thanked 9PSB for their dedication to equipping pupils with financial literacy. He said: “We are extremely appreciative of 9PSB for this invaluable financial literacy programme. It is crucial for our students to understand the significance of financial discipline, and we believe this initiative will help them develop the necessary skills to make informed financial decisions in the future.”
