As competition between the world’s two largest economies heats up, the United States unveiled new export restrictions Monday that target China’s capacity to produce sophisticated semiconductors used in artificial intelligence and weapon systems.

Jake Sullivan, National Security Adviser to the White House, said in a statement: “The United States has taken significant steps to protect our technology from being used by our adversaries in ways that threaten our national security.”

Washington will continue to collaborate with partners and friends “To proactively and aggressively safeguard our world-leading technologies and know-how.”

BrandSpur digital news platform reports that the most recent regulations limit exports to 140 businesses, including SiCarrier Technology and Piotech, two Chinese chip giants. The Commerce Department said they also affect Naura Technology Group, which manufactures equipment for chip fabrication.

Controls over two dozen different kinds of chipmaking equipment and three different sorts of software tools for semiconductor development or production are also included in the most recent release.
