Morocco will soon introduce a 5G internet service, according to a statement made last week by Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, Minister Delegate for Digital Transition and Administrative Reform. The launch plans are explained as part of the preparations to host the FIFA World Cup in 2030 and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) football event.
Seghrouchni described intentions to roll out 5G coverage to 25% of the population by 2026, with a goal of 70% by 2030, while speaking during a session of the House of Representatives. Cities chosen to host World Cup games will have full 5G coverage, guaranteeing fast internet access for spectators and locals alike during the competition. The action is part of a larger plan to improve the nation’s digital infrastructure in advance of these important athletic events, as Morocco World News notes.
The Minister Delegate stated that the government is aiming to connect 6,300 public administrative sites to fiber-optic internet by 2026 in addition to the 5G rollout. The program will reach 5.6 million households by 2030, increasing access to first-rate digital services, BrandSpur technology, and information news reports.
Continuing, the minister added that the growth of Morocco’s telecom industry depends on these initiatives. To speed up the nation’s digital transition, the government is aggressively assisting telecommunications companies through investment agreements, according to Morocco World News, with approximately MAD8.4 billion (US$834.8 million) invested in 2023 alone.
